SAN ANTONIO – Amilcar Vidal has stopped three straight undefeated opponents inside of two rounds.

The unbeaten, unknown Uruguayan middleweight prospect is 12-0, including 11 knockouts, and has been extended past the second round just twice since he launched his pro career in April 2018. Immanuwel Aleem has two losses and two draws on his record, yet the 25-year-old Vidal realizes that he’ll encounter his best opponent to date when he meets Aleem in a 10-round super middleweight fight Saturday night at AT&T Center.

“My resume makes me way more advanced for him,” Aleem told BoxingScene.com. “But I don’t take nothing lightly. I feel like he’s a strong guy coming to prove something. A win over me means a lot to him, and I can’t have that.”

The 27-year-old Aleem (18-2-2, 11 KOs) will fight for the first time in the 19 months since he lost a 10-round majority decision to Ronald Ellis (18-2-2, 12 KOs) in December 2019 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Aleem also will fight for the first time with respected trainer Ronnie Shields in his corner in the opener of a “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader that’ll feature Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano in the main event.

Shields took a liking to Aleem when the Richmond, Virginia, resident served as one of Jermall Charlo’s primary sparring partners for the WBC middleweight champion’s 12-round, unanimous-decision defeat of Sergiy Derevyanchenko on September 26 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

“Working with Ronnie, I knew I was gonna come out there [to Houston] and get that professional training,” Aleem said. “Ronnie worked with some of my favorite fighters, like Meldrick Taylor and Pernell Whitaker. So, it’s icing on the cake, getting to work with the person who worked with some of your favorite fighters.”

Aleem is 1-1-1 since suffering a third-round knockout defeat to Huge Centeno Jr. (27-3-1, 14 KOs, 1 NC) in August 2017 in Miami, Oklahoma. He acknowledged an upset of Vidal, whom he’ll fight at a catch weight of 162 pounds, would rejuvenate his career.

“He’s a durable guy,” Aleem said. “He’s young. He’s coming. He’s strong. He’s hungry. I don’t feel like he’s anything different from the other people I’ve been faced against. You know, I’ve fought [Matt] Korobov and Demond Nicholson and [Jonathan] Cepeda, and these are guys that had the same prestige coming up as prospects, hard hitters.”

The Vidal-Aleem match will open Showtime’s three-bout broadcast at 9 p.m. ET.

In the 12-round co-feature, Las Vegas’ Rolando Romero (13-0, 11 KOs) will face Swedish southpaw Anthony Yigit (24-1-1, 8 KOs). They were supposed to fight for Romero’s WBA interim lightweight title, but Yigit came in 5¼ pounds overweight Friday.

Houston’s Charlo (34-1, 18 KOs) and Buenos Aires’ Castano (17-0-1, 12 KOs) will fight for Charlo’s IBF, WBA and WBC 154-pound crowns and Castano’s WBO belt in the 12-round main event.
