Before a crowd of seven thousand fans at Casino Apodaca in Nuevo León, Mexico - Hugo Ruiz (33-2, 29KOs) needed to suck it up to overcome a very game effort from former champion Julio Cesar "Pingo" Miranda (37-8-2, 29KOs). It was Miranda who got off to a very good start in the first half of the fight, using his boxing ability and veteran tricks. Ruiz came back with a rally down the stretch to win a twelve round majority decision. The scores were 114-114, 115-113 and 115-113.

There were several ringside observers, and many fans, felt Miranda did more than enough to win the fight.

Ruiz was one fight removed from his close decision loss to Koki Kameda. He returned in June and stopped Giovanni Caro in two rounds. Pingo's lost four of his last seven bouts. He went to a draw in his last outing, in April against  Juan Jose "Goofy" Montes.

In the co-feature, Irma "Guerita" Sanchez won a ten round split decision of Katia "Katy" Gutierrez. The scores were 98-96, 98-96 in favor of the "Guerita" and the third had it 98-96 in favor of Gutierrez.
