On April 30th, WBO super featherweight title holder Shakur Stevenson became a unified champion when he defeated Oscar Valdez via dominant unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas

With the victory Stevenson added Valdez’s WBC title to his collection.

Afterwards, Stevenson stated his interest in unifying all of the titles in the division. In order for that to happen, he would have to defeat IBF champion Kenichi Ogawa of Japan and Venezuela’s WBA champion Roger Gutierrez.

However, WBA mandatory challenger Hector Luis Garcia poured cold water on Stevenson’s plans by reiterating his plans on facing Gutierrez next. He also said that he wouldn’t mind facing Stevenson in his next ring appearance.

“I am Gutierrez’s mandatory but if Stevenson wants a real challenge he should face me.  I told everyone before the fight that Stevenson would win a unanimous decision,” Garcia told BoxingScene.com.

“Valdez is too small. He’s a blown up super bantamweight. If Stevenson wants a real fight then come see me. Colbert thought I would be easy and look what happened to him.  I have power in both hands and am a real 130 pounder.”

Garcia was referring to his coming out party in February when he defeated the then unbeaten Chris Colbert via unanimous decision in Las Vegas in a Showtime televised main event. He took the fight on less than three weeks notice.

The 30-year-old Dominican Republic native started off strong against Colbert, dropping him in the 7th round in route to the dominant decision win.  He entered the fight as high as a 50-1 to underdog at various sports books.

If a fight against Stevenson doesn’t materialize, he plans on fighting Gutierrez sometime this summer.

“If Stevenson doesn’t want to fight me then he should do what his promoter Bob Arum said and look for someone else to fight,” said Garcia.

“F--- being the unified champion,” Arum exclaimed after the unbeaten Stevenson easily conquered Valdez. “Screw that! There’s not a person in this room that knows the WBA champion or the IBF champion. So, who wants to put those fights on? They’re not gonna draw sh!t!”
