Devin Haney doesn’t think much of Gervonta “Tank” Davis’ next opponent.

On January 7th Davis will take on WBA super featherweight champion Hector Luis Garcia.  The Showtime pay-per-view event will take place in Washington DC.

In a recent appearance on Tha Boxing Voice, Haney said that he had previously used Garcia for sparring and that he had to be replaced because he wasn’t up to the task.

“I sparred him. He is a tune up,” said Haney. “I kicked him out of camp because he couldn’t hang. I sparred him for the Joseph Diaz fight. I think I sparred him two or three times but he couldn’t keep up, so I kicked him out and got someone else.”

When the comments were relayed to Garcia after a training session, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“I don’t know what the f---- he is talking about. He can’t even crack an egg,” Garcia told ES News.

The interviewer then asked Garcia if he would be interested in facing the undisputed lightweight champion.

“Let’s do it. Let’s do whatever we can do to make the fight happen. Get in touch with Al Haymon and Luis DeCubas Jr. and let’s make it happen,” Garcia replied. “I really have no idea what the f--- he is talking about.  My daughter hits harder than he does.”

Garcia is currently putting the finishing touches on his training camp for Davis.

Haney’s promoter Top Rank is working on a Devin Haney-Vasilily Lomachenko showdown that would take place in the spring so a potential Haney-Garcia fight wouldn’t be possible until the summer at the absolute earliest.

The Dominican Republic’s Garcia burst onto the scene in February when he won multiple outlets’ Upset of the Year award with his dominant unanimous decision victory over Chris Colbert. The Bob Santos trained fighter followed that up by capturing his world title against Roger Gutierrez in August with another dominating performance.

Haney also won both of his fights in 2022, scoring two lopsided decision wins over George Kambosos Jr. in Australia to become the undisputed lightweight champion.
