Eddie Hearn has made an offer to Derry Mathews for the fight against Ohara Davies.

The Matchroom chief revealed that the 33-year-old has been handed the chance to take on the WBC Silver super-lightweight champion later this year.

Mathews, 38-11-2 (20 KOs), made his comeback on a Hearn-promoted show, after losing in a March challenge for the WBO world lightweight title against Terry Flanagan, in October, live on Sky Sports.

He took on Luke Campbell, the 2012 Olympic gold medallist and WBC Silver and Commonwealth champion in the 135-pound division, at the ECHO Arena, as part of the undercard to Tony Bellew's WBC cruiserweight world title defence against BJ Flores.

And although Mathews was stopped inside four rounds by 'Cool Hand', Hearn is hoping to make the fight between the Liverpudlian and undefeated 24-year-old Davies (14-0, 11 KOs) as soon as possible.

“I’d quite like to make that fight, it seems to be bubbling nicely and I’d like to make it for the Haye vs. Bellew card,” he told Kugan Cassius of iFL TV.

“It’s a good London versus Liverpool clash, but Ohara is the mandatory [challenger] to Tyrone Nurse and that’s quite a good little fight for the British title.”

Hearn has said that the undercard announcements for the David Haye vs. Tony Bellew show at the O2 Arena on March 4, exclusively live on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK, will begin next week.

Boxing Scene understands that an initial offer has been made by Hearn and Matchroom to Mathews with a view to making the fight on the big pay-per-view card in the capital.

Mathews and Davies have been involved in some verbal sparring on social media of late and the fight is one that the public, judging by the Twittersphere, is keen to see come to fruition.

It is unclear at this stage whether the pair will agree to the fight and put pen to paper on the deal but news should come in the next few weeks as to whether the showdown will become a reality.

Further details will be revealed in due course.
