On Tuesday night, the World Boxing Association (WBA) held its annual awards dinner on the first official day of activities for the 89th annual convention being held in Managua, Nicaragua. The Chairman of the WBA, Mr. Gilberto Mendoza Sr., was at the forefront of this activity that was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the Nicaraguan capital. The event was dedicated to the memory of Alexis Arguello who died last year in the capital.

The main awards were:

Fighter of the Year: David Haye of England, champion at heavyweight.

Honorable Mention: Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico, junior middleweight champion.

Promoter of the Year: Top Rank, Bob Arum.

Special Mention: Golden Boy Promotions.

Fight of the Year: Giovanni Segura vs. Iván Calderón

Prospect of the Year: Roman "Chocolatito Gonzalez, Interim flyweight champion.

Fedelatin Fighter of the Year: Hugo Cazares, Mexico.

European Fighter of the Year: Vyacheslav Senchenko.

Fighter of the Year in Asia: Takashi Uchiyama.

NABA Champion of the Year: Andre Ward, United States.

Matchmaker of the decade: Sampson Lewkowicz.

Matchmaker of the Year: Ricardo Rizzo.

Executive of the Year: Chris Meyer, Saureland Events.

Female Champion of the Year: Yessica Yolanda Bopp, Argentina.

Special Mention: Lisa Brown of Canada.

Official of the Year: Steve Smoger, the United States.

Special Mention: Nelson Vazquez.

Director of the Year: George Martinez, NABA and the WBA female boxing.

Legends of the WBA: Niwat Laosuwanwat, Hector Criollo, Ricardo "Finito" Lopez and Osvaldo Rivero, who attended the event.

Nicaraguan champions: Eddy Gazo, Juan Palacios, Adonis Rivas, Eduardo Marquez, Jose Alfaro and Roman "Chocolatito Gonzalez.
