Devin Haney didn’t waste any time telling the boxing world he told it so Saturday night.

Haney called Teofimo Lopez “a f------’ fraud” in the immediate aftermath of Lopez’s stunning upset defeat to George Kambosos Jr. at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York. Haney and Lopez are rivals who relentlessly contested the identity of the true WBC lightweight champion following Lopez’s career-changing victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko in October 2020.

Lopez lost the WBC “franchise” championship, in addition to the IBF, WBA and WBO belts to Kambosos. The previously unbeaten Lopez (16-1, 12 KOs) was consistently listed as a 10-1 favorite over Kambosos (20-0, 10 KOs) in the days leading up to their title bout, but Kambosos knocked Lopez down late in the first round, took Lopez’s hardest shots, overcame serious trouble throughout the 10th round and won a 12-round split decision.

Haney thoroughly enjoyed watching Lopez lose from afar.

“I hope it all makes sense now!,” Haney wrote in a message posted through his Twitter account. “Teo was a f------’ fraud!”

Brooklyn’s Lopez produced a more significant win than any of his contemporaries within the lightweight division when he out-pointed Lomachenko unanimously last year at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Losing to Kambosos was devastating, however, for an extremely confident former champion who had hoped to move up to pursue a showdown with undisputed junior welterweight champ Josh Taylor after beating Kambosos, who was the mandatory challenger for Lopez’s IBF belt.

Lopez dropped Kambosos with 1:59 to go in the 10th round after landing two right hands to the side of his head. The 24-year-old Lopez seemingly didn’t have the stamina required to finish off the resilient Kambosos, who won the 11th and 12th rounds on all three scorecards.

Judges Frank Lombardi (115-111) and Glenn Feldman (115-112) scored their fight for Kambosos. Don Trella had Lopez ahead, 114-113, when their dramatic battle ended.

Haney (26-0, 15 KOs) also applauded Kambosos’ effort and welcomed a full title unification fight in 2022. Las Vegas’ Haney must first get past former IBF junior lightweight champion Joseph Diaz Jr. (32-1-1, 15 KOs) in their 12-round fight for Haney’s WBC world lightweight championship Saturday night at MGM Grand Garden Arena (DAZN).

“Congrats @georgekambosos well deserved victory you worked hard for it!,” Haney Tweeted. “Let’s make it happen for all the belts! #RealUndisputed.”

The 23-year-old Haney mocked Lopez’s claim that he won 10 of the 12 rounds against Kambosos in another post on Twitter late Saturday night.

“Oh yeah Teo has gone crazy … I told y’all this already,” Haney wrote.
