IBF middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin is preparing for a high-stakes unification coming up next month with WBA champion Ryota Murata.

Golovkin, 39-years-old, will travel to Japan to face Murata on December 29.

But, the biggest fight out there for GGG is a trilogy showdown with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

They fought to a controversial twelve round split draw in 2018, with Canelo winning a very close twelve round majority decision in their 2019 rematch.

Since their second outing, there has been heavy talk of a third encounter. No serious discussions have taken place and Canelo has continued to rise up in weight and rack up world titles.

Earlier this month, Canelo knocked out Caleb Plant to become the undisputed champion at super middleweight. In 2019, Canelo captured the WBO light heavyweight title when he knocked out Sergey Kovalev.

And next May, Canelo in looking to make a tremendous jump in weight to challenge WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu.

With Canelo already having plans for May, a third fight with Golovkin would likely not happen until September at the earliest.

"This fight is possible," Golovkin told Sky Sports. "Theoretically nothing has changed. There are certain questions which have been posed [to Canelo]. They are still open, they remain unanswered. We have been discussing it but haven't moved towards this fight for quite some time. You are interested because he beat all the UK fighters! But it is of no concern to me."

Golovkin explains that he doesn't dwell on securing a third fight with Canelo.

"We fought, I know who he is. I don't think about him at all," Golovkin said. "It isn't something I don't give any thought to."

In order to have a third fight with Canelo, a jump in weight will be required - which Golovkin will not explore until an offer is presented.

"I don't want to entertain moving to a different division unless there is an offer on the table," Golovkin said.

"Imagine if I moved to 175-pounds, the number of people calling me out will increase by 30 percent! The army of fighters who self-promote themselves by using my name would only increase in number."
