Giovanni Marquez demonstrated at times Friday night exactly why so many industry insiders are high on the young prospect’s potential.

The 21-year-old son of former IBF junior middleweight champ Raul Marquez defeated Nelson Morales by unanimous decision in his four-round pro debut. With his father and head trainer in his corner, Marquez won their welterweight bout by scores of 40-36, 39-37 and 39-37 in the opener of a “ShoBox: The New Generation” tripleheader Showtime televised from Deadwood Mountain Grand Hotel in Deadwood, South Dakota.

Marquez, a 2021 National Golden Gloves champion, joined former U.S. Olympians Gary Russell Jr., Dominic Breazeale, Marcus Browne, Terrell Gausha, Errol Spence Jr. and Rau’shee Warren as one of only seven boxers to make his pro debut in a bout televised as part of Showtime’s long-running prospect series. The 30-year-old Morales, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, lost for the first time as a pro (2-1, 1 KO).

Raul Marquez moved back to his usual spot at ringside as part of Showtime’s broadcast team following his son’s impressive pro debut.

Morales spent much of the fourth round simply attempting to survive, as Marquez unloaded right hands and had his way with him over the final three minutes.

Marquez landed a right to the side of Morales’ head that made Morales move away from him with approximately 25 seconds to go in the third round. A few seconds later, Marquez again split Morales’ guard again with another right uppercut.

Marquez caught Morales with another effective right hand just before the third round concluded.

Morales came back after eating a left hook and landed a right hand on Marquez about 25 seconds into the second round. Marquez backed Morales into the ropes just before the midway mark of the second round and unloaded an array of power punches that made Morales cover up.

Morales mostly fought from a defensive posture for the rest of the second round.

Marquez split Morales’ guard with a right uppercut and quickly knocked him off balance with a left hook when there were 40 seconds to go in the opening round. Morales enjoyed some success earlier in the opening round, before Marquez made a statement during the final minute of it.
