It is now Daniel Valladares’ turn to wait on the rematch.

BoxingScene.com has learned that the snakebit IBF strawweight title consolidation bout has suffered another delay. This time, it is interim titlist Ginjiro Shigeoka who was forced to withdraw from their scheduled August 11 rematch due to an injury to his left leg suffered during training camp.

“We received the news that my opponent Ginjiro was injured,” Valladares revealed overnight. “Bitter news for me and my team as we were working very hard for this [title] defense.”

Boxing Scene was informed that the new rescheduled date is October 7 at EDION Arena in Osaka, which hosted their first and where the August 11 show was to be held.

The rematch was due to take place seven months after their truncated first meeting on January 6 at the same venue. Shigeoka appeared on his way to dethroning Mexico’s Valladares before a clash of heads left the visiting titlist unable to continue with just 12 seconds to go in the third round.

The bout was declared a No-Contest, which left the reigning titlist from Monterrey, Mexico to next face former titlist Rene Mark Cuarto in a separate rematch within 90 days of his previous title defense. The injuries sustained from the January 6 fight forced Valladares to file a medical exception with the IBF, who in turn approved a Shigeoka-Cuarto interim title fight.

Shigeoka (9-0, 7KOs; 1ND) won the secondary title via ninth-round knockout of former titlist after suffering a knockdown early in their April 16 clash in his Tokyo hometown. The same show saw the 23-year-old southpaw’s older brother, Yudai Shigeoka (7-0, 5KOs) claim the interim WBC title with a seventh-round knockout of former WBO titleholder Wilfredo Mendez.

Valladares (26-3-1, 15KOs) has not fought since the brief meeting versus Shigeoka. He claimed the IBF title in a twelve-round win over Cuarto last July 1 in San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico.

Once the fight is rescheduled, it will mark his second consecutive road trip after he’d fought exclusively in Mexico dating back to his February 2014 pro debut. He is unbeaten in his last five starts after he suffered back-to-back defeats in 2020.
