Gilberto Ramirez will have to wait a little longer to rebound from his lone career defeat.

Added to his redemption pile is finding a weight at which to safely compete.

BoxingScene.com has learned that Ramirez’s light heavyweight bout versus Gabriel Rosado will no longer move forward this weekend. The matchup was due to headline Saturday’s DAZN show from The Walter Pyramid on the campus of California State University-Long Beach in Long Beach, California. However, Ramirez was removed from the show after showing up well over the contracted limit for their scheduled 12-round light heavyweight contest.

Golden Boy Promotions is expected to address the situation momentarily, though the Joseph Diaz-Mercito Gesta lightweight bout will now serve as the new headlining act.

“Due to Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez failing to make the contracted weight, Zurdo vs. Rosado has been canceled,” Golden Boy confirmed in a statement. “We are very disappointed for letting our fans down, and will work with Gabriel Rosado to bring him back to the ring very soon.

“Joseph “JoJo” Diaz, Jr. vs. Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta is the new main event for Saturday, March 18.”

Ramirez (44-1, 30KOs) sought to bounce back from his lone career defeat. The 31-year-old southpaw from Mazatlan, Mexico failed in his bid to become a two-division titlist when dropped a lopsided decision to WBA light heavyweight titlist Dmitry Bivol. The fight was his first to go the distance since moving up to light heavyweight in 2019 after having held the WBO super middleweight title for three years.

His ability to safely make light heavyweight has been a concern well before Ramirez attempted to challenge for the title. He reportedly ballooned up to nearly 200 pounds after making weight for his knockout win over Dominic Boesel in their WBA title eliminator last May in Ontario, California.

Philadelphia’s Rosado (26-16-1, 15KOs) was prepared to fight at light heavyweight for the first time, while stuck in a three-fight losing streak. The 37-year-old veteran trialhorse lost a lopsided ten-round decision to Ali Akhmedov last September 17 following competitive defeats to Shane Mosley Jr. and former WBO junior middleweight titlist Jaime Munguia.

Diaz (32-3-1, 15KOs) aims to end a two-fight losing streak. The former IBF junior lightweight titlist was competitive in a December 2021 WBC lightweight title fight points loss to Devin Haney, who has since fully unified the division. Diaz wasn’t nearly as competitive in a convincing ten-ro The fight with Diaz is a welcomed opportunity by Gesta (33-3-3, 17KOs) after watching plans fall through for a high-profile showdown with unbeaten lightweight contender Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19KOs). The two were due to meet in late January, only for Garcia to pull out of the fight as he preferred to head straight into an April 22 superfight with Gervonta Davis (28-0, 26KOs).

As it turns out, Gesta gets a DAZN main event after all. The 35-year-old Filipino southpaw from San Diego has not fought since a ten-round win over Joel Diaz Jr. last April 21 in Indio, California. That fight was the first for the former title challenger since November 2019, with hopes of remaining more active beginning with Saturday’s showdown versus Diaz.
