George Rincon had to settle for another distance win.

The locally-based junior welterweight prospect soundly outpointed Nikolai Buzolin over eight rounds. Scores were 80-72 on all three scorecards in favor of Carrollton, Texas’ Rincon in their DAZN-televised opener Saturday evening live from the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

The decision bump up the bout to the main telecast came Friday evening, after visa issues left Mexico’s Pablo Cesar Cano (33-7-1, 23KOs) unable to cross the border for his planned ten-round junior welterweight bout with Puerto Rico’s Danielito Zorrilla (15-0, 11KOs). Neither boxer seemed particularly prepared for the occasion, as action was very slow moving from the opening bell.

Rincon managed to land the most significant punch of round one, a straight left that landed straight down the middle. Buzolin—who hails from Tyumen, Russia and now based out of Brooklyn, New York—struggled to find his offense, first fighting out of a conventional stance versus the southpaw Rincon before switching to the left side later in the fight.

The same pattern held true for the next several rounds. Both boxers pawed at one another with their jab, with Rincon doing the better job of filling the gaps and landing the few punches that were offered.

Action picked up in round five, by far Rincon’s best of the fight. Buzolin loaded up to throw a right, with Rincon quickly adjusting and landing a check hook to freeze the Russian boxer in his tracks. Rincon connected with another right hook along with a straight left later in the round.

Buzolin did his part to pick up the pace in round six, still getting outworked by the local prospect but putting forth his best effort to make it a more competitive fight. Rincon was still beating him to the punch and also doing well to fight his way out of frequent clinches, to which Buzolin frequently complained to referee Ruben Perez despite serving as the culprit.

The lone threat of adversity for Rincon came in the eighth and final round. A clash of heads left the unbeaten prospect with a cut high on top of his scalp, resulting in a brief timeout but never threatening to stop the fight.

Rincon advances to 12-0 (7KOs), going the distance for the second straight time—both in the greater Dallas area—after having knocked out his previous five opponents. Buzolin falls to 8-4-1 (3KOs)

Rincon-Buzolin served as the televised opener of the four-fight main card, headlined by local favorite and rising welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. (17-0, 17KOs) versus Lithuania’s two-time Olympian and former title challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas (22-1-1, 18KOs).
