Before the world realized who George Kambosos Jr. was, Lou DiBella knew he had to do some sly maneuvering and clever matchmaking to get his man some well-needed attention. Wins over Mickey Bey and Lee Selby, two former world champions, made a few in the industry turn their heads. But ultimately, the Aussie was viewed as nothing more than an inconsequential blimp on the lightweight radar.

Quietly, DiBella not only believed but he was also positioning him for a life-changing moment. After a ridiculous amount of postponements and delays, Kambosos (21-2, 10 KOs) was given a crack at Teofimo Lopez and his, depending on who you asked, unified throne.

It seemed like a long shot but Kambosos got it done. With his name now buzzing, he parlayed that victory into back-to-back paydays against Devin Haney. Those hefty paychecks, however, came with consecutive losses.

After taking some time off, the former unified champ got back in the win column, albeit not impressively. Although it was controversial, a victory over Maxi Hughes seems to be just enough to push Kambosos back into the big-fight picture. According to DiBella, his current promoter, Vasiliy Lomachenko is next up for his man in 2024.

“Yes,” revealed DiBella to BoxingScene.com when asked if Lomachenko is on the agenda. “Early Spring.”

Lomachenko, at least to a certain degree, suffered the same fate as Kambosos, coming up short against Haney a few months ago. His loss, nevertheless, was much more competitive. At the age of 35, the former pound-for-pound star appears to still have a ton left in the tank.

Beating the Ukrainian is hard enough if Kambosos isn’t on his A game. If that listless, apathetic Kambosos shows up, DiBella knows he won’t stand much of a chance in their supposed showdown.

“I think George will be better this fight," continued DiBella. "I expect more from him.”
