Maxi Hughes smiled and promised to sabotage George Kambosos Jr.’s return to the ring as they walked away from each other Friday afternoon.

Moments earlier, Kambosos and Hughes both came in beneath the lightweight limit for their 12-round, 135-pound fight Saturday night in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Australia’s Kambosos (20-2, 10 KOs) stepped on the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission’s scale at 134.6 pounds, slightly lighter than England’s Hughes (26-5-2, 5 KOs), who officially weighed 134.7.

They’ll fight for Hughes’ IBO lightweight title in a main event ESPN will air from FireLake Arena. Kambosos-Hughes is also an IBF elimination match that’ll determine its number two contender in the 135-pound division, which would move the winner into position to fight for an unclaimed IBF belt against Argentina’s Gustavo Lemos (28-0, 18 KOs), the number one contender, if undefeated, undisputed champ Devin Haney gives up his IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO crowns to compete in the 140-pound division.

Kambosos, 30, will fight for the first since Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) decisively defeated him again in their 12-round rematch October 16 at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia. Hughes, 33, has won seven consecutive bouts since English southpaw Liam Walsh (23-1, 15 KOs) outpointed him unanimously in their 10-rounder in November 2019 in London.
