Former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa has received praise from his head trainer Pedro Roque.

Last month when he faces Gervonta Davis for the WBA "regular" lightweight title, the Olympic gold medal winner injured his Achilles tendon in the second round. It appeared to have come after a knockdown took place. After some confusion in the corner, it was decided that Gamboa would continue to fight.

As the fight played out, he was dropped two more times and finally stopped in the twelfth round.

Gamboa will not have to underdog any surgery for the injury. He intends to rehab the injury for the next few months.

At 38-years-old, the Cuban boxer does not have the luxury of being inactive for too long.

"Gamboa did a good preparation and was encouraged for the fight. We knew that it would be real difficult, but I trusted in the work that we had done, in the 112 rounds of sparring we did with high-level lefties. I was confident we could win," Roque told George Ebro.

"This is an old injury, which comes from his amateur days. He has been given treatment and Gamboa with his courage has managed to overcome it. This isn't Gamboa's first fight with pain, but we're not talking about pain, we're talking about preparation. That allows you to get to the 12th round.

"I let the fight continue, because the injury is not to the head. If there were blows to the head, I would have stopped the fight. Gamboa has gained a lot (from the fight), the prestige and respect of the PBC, of Floyd Mayweather, of Showtime. They congratulated him and expressed that there are important plans for Gamboa with them.

"We went to the hospital together. Doctors are giving him intensive treatment. We're avoiding the operation. Luckily there is a lot of technology and there are the resources to recover it. Pretty soon Gamboa's going to be ready for the fight. When we did an MRI test on his leg at Baptist Hospital, we also took advantage and did one on his head. His brain, his nervous system is perfect, in unbeatable condition.

"If Gamboa just stays in the chair (and doesn't fight), we lose everything. He misses his career completely. We know there are detractors behind him. And those detractors, while insignificant, sometimes represent a lot to the media. But I am satisfied, because we have received congratulations from many levels and people. They told us we saved the show.''
