Carl Frampton’s camp say they are working to agree a new date for the Frampton Gutierrez fight after Saturday’s event had to be cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice.

The match was called off after Mexican Andres Gutierrez fell in the shower, damaging his chin and front teeth.

A joint statement from Cyclone Promotions and the SSE Arena said: “Since the accident last night and subsequent event cancellation, Cyclone Promotions, the SSE Arena, the Gutierrez management team, boxing authorities and relevant broadcasters have been working to agree a new date for the fight.

"We appreciate the patience of all ticket holders who can retain their tickets pending confirmation of a rescheduled fight. For anyone wishing to arrange a refund, further details will be released early next week."

The statement added: “We wish to apologise once again for this very unfortunate cancellation and wish Andres a speedy recovery from the serious injuries he sustained last night.”

Frampton told UTV on Friday night he was “deeply disappointed” for himself, his family, the undercard fighters and all those who bought tickets.

He said: “It was an unfortunate accident. I wanted to fight, I was busting to come back and fight in Belfast, you just can’t make this sort of stuff up. It’s very very unfortunate.”

Speaking about narrowly missing his weight division, he added: “There’s bigger featherweights in the world than me and they can make it, but I feel like I’m crammed into this division as well, the weight wasn’t coming off as it normally would. But if people did see the sacrifices I’ve been making in camp, and saw what I tried to get to that nine stone limit, I would hope they would understand.”

The contest was due to go ahead despite the Belfast boxer coming in 1lb over the featherweight limit, but was no longer a WBC title eliminator for Frampton.
