Anthony Fowler returned to the ring with a win and bounced back from his maiden career defeat.

The 28-year-old lost his unblemished record last time out against Scott Fitzgerald and after stepping in for his former foe against Blackpool’s Rose, he got back in the winning column at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool.

Fowler, as part of the JDNXTGEN card in his home city, exclusively live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN Stateside, claimed a wide points win over the former WBO world super-welterweight title challenger to pick up the vacant WBO Inter-Continental middleweight title last Friday.

And after tallies of 98-92 twice and 97-93 were read out, ‘The Machine’ went on to call for a rematch with Fitzgerald.

Preston’s ‘Fitzy’ dropped and decisioned Fowler at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool back in March but he is confident that it would be a totally different story if the pair were to meet again.

Fitzgerald is the mandatory challenger to Cheeseman’s British super-welterweight title, with that fight set to happen next.

It is understood that Cheeseman could face Fitzgerald in early October, but further details will be revealed in due course.

“I don't care where [the rematch] is,” Fowler added. “I’m only 11 fights in to my career and I had to be patient and follow my coach’s tactics against a very experienced quality fighter who has boxed at world level. Believe me, I’m only going to get better and I can’t wait to fight Scott again and put that wrong right.”

IN OTHER NEWS: Ryan Farrag returned to winning ways last weekend.

The former European bantamweight champion had been out of action since last October’s defeat at the hands of Sunny Edwards.

Farrag took on the 23-year-old in a challenge for the WBO European super-flyweight crown at York Hall in London and lost by unanimous decision.

But the 31-year-old moved to 20-4 with five quick on Sunday in Spain.

Farrag boxed against Elvis Guillen at Marbella’s Plaza de Toros de Puerto Banus in Andalucia, as part of the supporting cast to Yokasta Valle’s dethroning of IBF minimumweight female world champion Joana Pastrana, outpointing the veteran over six rounds.
