Xavier Martinez will head into his 23rd birthday with his most competitive and satisfying win to date. A pair of knockdowns put a scare into the junior lightweight prospect, who bounced back from a disastrous 8th round to claim a 12-round unanimous decision win over Claudio Marrero. It's a sad state when you get dropped twice and still win the fight unanimous.

Makes me wonder how different things would be if the scores started at 6-6 and went from there instead.

Marrero makes some very dumb decisions in fights, like he has a psychological defect in his behavior. First he drops his hands and gets knocked out by Rojas and now he has Martinez on the verge of a KO and totally lets Martinez off the hook. Marrero could have had a KO win and set himself up for a title fight, and gave up all that. Books on psychology talk about self-sabotaging behavior and this dude is the poster boy for that.

But if he recovers and wins the next ten rounds in a twelve round fight he would still be a clear winner by four points.
