  • Comments Thread For: Showtime's Espinoza Promises Charlos PPV Will Deliver Bang For Consumer Buck

UNCASVILLE, Connecticut Stephen Espinoza is sympathetic toward those under financial duress during this pandemic. Showtime's president of sports and event programming also understands some of the complaints consumers and non-buyers have expressed regarding boxing pay-per-view events. Espinoza completely disagrees, however, with the critics contending that Showtime's six-fight pay-per-view show Saturday night is too expensive.

“Of course, that’s an impediment for the pay-per-view. But as a general comment, I don’t understand the complaints about the pay-per-view price. This the same price that it’s been for years and it’s double of what you typically get from a pay-per-view. Actually, it’s more than double because the quality of the fights up and down [the card] is way beyond the norm. We hear boxing fans asking for, ‘We want the best fighting the best.’ OK, well, how about a top-three guy in the division against another top-three guy in the division? Or, how about a unification fight with three belts on the line? OK, that’s the best fighting the best.

“Then they say, ‘Well, give us strong undercards.’ OK, how about four more world title fights? And the one that’s not actually a world title fight is between two former world champions? We give them all that, and then it’s, ‘Well, it’s too expensive.’ So, the reality is there will be those that complain and criticize no matter what. But I think the true boxing fan recognizes the strength of this card and the value that it presents.”

Espinoza is on point! The problem with that statement is "...the true boxing fan recognizes the strength of this card..." If you only sold PPVs to "true boxing fans," SHO Boxing would be out of business just like HBO! Should've gave us 3 hot fights for $50, vice 6 fights for $75! I'm still buying it, because it is a loaded card!

Agreed. To the point that there might be some possible upsets. A true boxing fan knows this is the type of card that you rarely see, but the regular folks won't know that. The Charlos aren't really well-known or popular aside from casuals knowing them as "the boxing twins". They'd be a tough sell even for the hardcores if it was just them on PPV. But this card is top quality from the opening fight. The Charlos are in matchups that can really take them to new heights and guys like Rosario and Derevyanchenko are a serious threats to that. Can't wait for this weekend.

Showtime's Espinoza can't relate to the regular public, because he probably earns in the high 6 figures annually. So how could he possibly relate to people who've been out of work for 4 month's, and are just starting to return to work, and some who are still without work. Paying for funerals, and just basically struggling all around. There's no question that the PPV card they've put together is top quality, and quantity, but people just don't have that kind of money to spend on entertainment. They have to take care of the household necessities, and day to day bills. I don't think I'll ever pay 74.95, for a PPV event ever again, it's just to steep.

It is a good card that is stacked but the common fan always need that big recognizable name in order to buy the fight.

Hopefully this card does well so they will continue to add meaningful fights to the fight card.

Don King used to stack his ppv events.

This is how Steve Kim, of ESPN, describes the card:

It might not reach the level of "Revenge: The Rematches," the Don King-promoted pay-per-view headlined by Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. in 1994 that in my view is still the best lineup ever put together for a boxing pay-per-view card. But it's a deep roster of quality fights from top to bottom.

Either way they should keep it up and become known for good cards. Enough 30-0 but haven’t fought no one but bums, hell 20-0 is too much. There are cases but for most guy;s with extensive amateur careers already, wholly unnecessary.. Once they start stepping outside of PBC to make the fights I wanted like Crawford v Spence, Wilder v Joshua etc, you can count me in.

Fans need to realize that Haymon and Espinoza weren't investing in Premium Guaranteed purses without adding a PPV to cover.. Why? Because Espinoza needs to show a return to the Executives that would've green lit Espinoza's budget. Haymon didn't cover it himself or else it wouldn't PPV and Showtime would've bought the fights without insecurity. That's the nature of the business.

Also, Espinoza knows that he's under pressure for the LSC Davis PPV too.

What Haymon and Espinoza SHOULD'VE done was to disperse the cards out from Q4, different dates, for all the fights, co-main, and undercards.

Fox has more dispersity for their PPV because they need a Spence vs DSG to close the year and show something optimistic with their boxing during a post pandemic.

Though with Showtime and their streaming app, they would've done more doing exactly what DAZN does, just promote all their fights with availability to the APP as well as market on the general cable platform. THese are all good fights, worth the Q4 subscription for Showtime boxing. So how much does Showtime cost monthly? $12 bucks? You'd gain more subs doing this, which Showtime could see a metric during the pandemic.

The unfortunate nature for cable platforms is that these consumers have to pay for a cable subscription too. This is why apps are the way to go because they're standalone. For all the nonsense DAZN haters on this site whom would bring up ''oh Netflix has movies..'' lol . Well there you go, this model proves why the Showtime App should be pushed more, so that way these dummies get the point that having a Showtime sub with the intent for boxing also gets you your phagg0t ass shows or movies.

''oh we know all that we just don't like anything outside of Haymon because racism exists!'' - DAZN hater

MEXICAN BIDNESS 101! Derp derp derp.
