  • Comments Thread For: Nigel Benn Explains Return, How it Came Down To Sakio Bika

Nigel Benn says that he will retire for good whatever the result of his comeback fight in November whatever the result, saying his fight with Sakio Bika is a one-off to give him closure, not because he needs the money. The 55-year-old former WBO middleweight and WBC super-middleweight champion has not boxed since 1996, but he will make his return to the ring on November 23 in Birmingham against Bika, who won the WBC super-middleweight title 17 years after Benn lost it.

    Sounds very confident......

This isn’t a very good idea.

Bika is no spring chicken but should have enough in the tank to punish Benn.

Prayers with Gerald but Benn looks like wants to end up like him. At 55, no reason to fight.

Nigel Benn wasn't even a great boxer in his prime. It just looks like he has a death wish now.

I'm afraid this won't end well for Ben.

Bika's a very deliberate pick, he's a guy who has name recognition from fighting for world titles but was never seen as being all that good and is in essence retired himself, having not fought in two years. Even with that said, Benn is probably overestimating himself. Hopkins went until 50, sure, but Hopkins was a freak of nature who trained like an animal and had the IQ to avoid excessive punishment and pace himself sensibly. Benn is 55, has been sat on his arse for years doing nothing and has none of Hopkins' attributes, as good as he was in his prime. Boxing seems to be in love with "bad idea" fights lately, and this is probably the worst one. I expect a very ugly and sloppy fight that'll illustrate perfectly why this kind of thing just isn't done in this sport. Of course, no lessons will be learned by anyone because it seems like arrogance and hubris is the prevailing way of thinking amongst boxers nowadays.
