Undefeated Russian Murat Gassiev defends his International Boxing Federation cruiserweight crown against Poland's Krzysztof Wlodarczyk on Saturday in a quarterfinal bout of the World Boxing Super Series tournament. Hopefully 2018 can build on the overrated year of boxing 2017 by offering as many or more good matchups on paper as 2017 did, but without the corruption, early stoppages, uneven drug testing standards between opponents, and past prime performances.

If boxing is able to achieve that in 2018, having a handful of top matchups in the WBSS already in the bag, on the side if you will, almost like a cherry on top of the cake that doesn't, or at least should not, sacrifice the size of the cake itself, should be a big reason why. That's the best thing about the ESPN deal and WBSS happening at the same time. It's two investors in the sport paying for big fights. Instead of only Showtime and HBO paying for big fights, you have the WBSS and ESPN doing so as well, which is also what has allowed the lower weights and the cruiserweight division to get more attention.

So hopefully, we see many more big fights in 2018, but without all the issues that made most of them huge disappointments in 2017.
