  • Comments Thread For: Inoue Admits Stoppage of Nieves Wasn't 'The Sweetest of Wins'

Naoya Inoue annihilated Antonio Nieves on Saturday night, but "The Monster" didn't impress his harshest critic. Inoue expressed disappointment about the way he performed during a six-round destruction of Nieves at StubHub Center in Carson, California. The unbeaten Japanese boxer picked apart Nieves for six rounds, until Nieves' trainer, Joe Delguyd, told referee Lou Moret to stop the fight.

Wasn't a fight like the other 2 on the card, but he put his power on show and that may attract people who haven't seen him before.

He did what he was supposed to.

I feel like "monster" is a fitting moniker on the basis of this fight, for good and for bad reasons. The good: his power looks unreal for super fly. The fact that he was forcing Nieves back with punches that were blocked was really impressive. The punches impacting sounded like he was hitting him with a hammer. The bad: I thought he looked pretty ponderous and struggled to control the ring. In short he has Godzilla's power but also Godzilla's poise and maneuverability; ie, not a lot. It'll be a great fight if he fights Rungvisai, that fight would either be a bloodbath or a car crash, and it'd be tricky to pick a winner.

If you watch some of his other fights where other guys stand and trade more, you get to see that he does have the feet, upper body and head movement to go with the power, but also defensively responsible and accurate with his punches. Haven't seen him get really clocked yet, so don't know what his chin is like, but if he's got a JCC chin he's going to be......a monster. Only 24 too, so likely to go up in weight at some point. Got a feeling nothing is going to stop him at 115 in the meantime.
