  • Comments Thread For: Berchelt Batters, Bloodies Vargas, Stops Him in the 11th Round

This was one tough fight too many for Francisco Vargas.
Fellow Mexican Miguel Berchelt made the most of his first high-profile fight on American television and stopped Vargas in the 11th round Saturday night in Indio, California. Berchelt improved to 31-1, recorded his 28th knockout and won the WBC world super featherweight title from the previously unbeaten Vargas (23-1-2, 17 KOs).
A younger, stronger Berchelt battered Vargas for much of a mostly one-sided fight and made a bloody mess of the ever-valiant Vargas' face. Referee Raul Caiz Jr. finally stopped Berchelt's vicious assault at 2:19 of the 11th round, with Vargas taking an unnecessary amount of punishment.
HBO televised their entertaining title fight from Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

Berchelt looked like the real deal here.

4 even rounds and then Miguel took over. He dominated Vargas afterward.

That was uncomfortable to watch. Vargas ate 337 power punches. His corner wouldn't even throw in the towel and the ref took to long to stop it.

Vargas looked like a totally shot fighter after back to back FOTY type wars.

Hopefully this screws up Salido's plans and he's now forced to take a fight with Loma.

He'll get battered either way, but he'd likely make more money fight Loma than Berchelt.

Another good fight on HBO. Berchelt proved to be legit. Damn good performance.

Vargas showed a lot of heart but Miura and Salido took a lot out of him. He needs surgery to repair the scar tissue and a long lay off. Golden Boy should not bring him back till the later part of the year.

This felt like Lucas Matthysee all over again when he fought Postal. The bigger, younger, and ultimately the fresher fighter won.

130 pound division got a even deeper tonight. Not sure who was more impressive between Tank and Berchelt but both showed out over these last 2 months.

                Great Show tonight HBO

Those cuts he suffered in those wars are a major problem. Needs to see a surgeon to try and remove the scar tissue because otherwise they will reopen every fight. blood in his face a few rounds in and fought with a bloody mask for 2/3s of the fight. He'll be back and can still make many exciting fights but they have to find some way to manage those cuts.

Macho pride, ref did what his corner should of done when those cuts got out of control. Doubt he could see at all with cuts opened up over both eyes. Vargas has the heart of a lion so you knew he wasn't going to quit no matter how bad his face got but his corner should of saved him from himself rounds earlier.
