    Legends are notorious for their often having been woven out of whole cloth.

    To shift metaphore, they're often a concoction of outright lies, half truths and a dash of truth--- the last one to make the thing potable, but just barely. When one drinks too much of them, they make one dizzy and less able to distinguish falsehoods from reality. A really heady brew, that! But that's not all! The crazier part is that legends taste so well, so many of us gullible fans dip into their wellspring and quaff!!!
