  • Comments Thread For: Insider Notebook: Mayweather-Maidana, Khan, Golovkin

By Robert Morales - It wasn't too long after Floyd Mayweather Jr. tweeted the news about his next opponent, when Richard Schaefer returned a phone call we had made seeking comment.

Knowing that Schaefer - CEO of Golden Boy Promotions - is a promoter, it's understandable that he is going to hype the news as much as possible since his company is so heavily involved.

He went big on the heavy-handed Marcos Maidana, who will take on Mayweather on May 3, probably at MGM Grand in Las Vegas (on Showtime pay-per-view). [Click Here To Read More]

Schaefer's a bigger ***hole than Bob; quite an achievement!

Oscar said the other day he loves Bob; that makes no sense re their not working together.

Can anyone speculate on that? I want to know what's the real reason for this promotional war CRAP!

How come Maidana got a puncher's chance while Canelo did not have? This fight will be a stinker.

          Here's why....

Canelo really disappointed me in that fight. You saw he had the power to trouble Mayweather - he lands that body combination with a left hook to the body and a right cross crushing Mayweather's arm and Floyd is complaining about his arm hurting at the end of the fight ("oh it must have collided with something" - nice bluff). However in that combination, Mayweather counters with a good shot to the head, and Canelo is discouraged. He doesn't do anything like it again. Disappointingly, despite being a stone heavier, rather than pressure Floyd and accept that he'll get hit but has the youth/weight/strength to win a battle of exchanges, Canelo backed off and opted to try to catch Mayweather - one of the most braindead strategies ever to enter a ring. "Let's outbox the best technical boxer of the last 15 years, if not all time."

Maidana won't be discouraged. He'll eat shots and then throw more. You saw it vs Broner. Broner would land a punch and a Maidana bomb comes back. Now we know Mayweather is the master of hit and move, so how Maidana deals with that will be fascinating - but we know Maidana won't try to outbox Floyd, nor will he do a Guerrero and stop pressuring just because he got tagged a few times on the way in. Maidana will fight more like Ortiz - and that's a good thing. Ortiz, before his temperament blew, was fighting how you need to fight Mayweather - push him back and throw whilst doing so. Get him to the ropes, don't let him set. Mayweather fights best if he's set as you come to him (as you saw in the early rounds where Ortiz would stop in front of Mayweather before coming in - but in round 4 he got angry and started moving forward much more quickly and behind punches). If Mayweather is moving back, he can't do those flash right hand leads which win him so many fights.

Now I'm not going to say Maidana is going to win, I don't believe that, but I think he has a better chance than the majority of fights Mayweather has picked in recent history. Canelo had a great chance but not the warrior mindset he needed to make his weight count. If Canelo turned it into a war, he could have caused Floyd a lot of trouble - the fact that the few punches he threw with intent did damage is a testament to this - but he didn't have the desire to do that nor the experience in his corner (who were, frankly, total muppets). It seemed Canelo and his corner were unaware that this was their only opportunity to beat Mayweather and so he fought like a sparring partner.

We know Maidana will get in there and give it everything to try and seize his opportunity. He'll leave 100% in the ring. Not the 25% that Canelo did.

Of all the fights Mayweather has been in, nobody has taken him to war at the higher weights. It can be done; Emmanuel Augustus did it and it's one of the few times you see Floyd look pretty uncomfortable in a ring. Cotto did it for a few rounds but wasn't able to maintain it because he was eating too many hooks. I doubt Maidana will be content to stand in front of Mayweather and let him tee off like Cotto was doing. This is definitely a decent challenge for Floyd.

So true about Khan. Khan will only box from the outside and try not to engage. But Khan does make mistakes and gets caught. Floyd capitalizes on those mistakes after he cuts off the ring on him.

As for Maidana, he's game. He fights like he has something to prove and has that killer instinct. Not many of Floyd's opponents had that going in.

Problem has been finding sparring partners who can emulate Floyd's skills and smarts.

That's where it ends for Floyd's opponents.

Well said, lets hope Maidana really brings it. Castillo, DLH had some succes brawling him on the back foot, put his back against the ring and keep throwing. Guerrero was unable to pin him down because of his slow footwork, so I guess Maidanas footwork is key in this fight.

Canelo did have a puncher's chance, but he blew it. He's inexperienced at the top level. He's got power & good speed for his size, but nothing like Mayweather. Floyd just danced around, making Alvarez miss & pot shot him all night, while Canelo followed him around like a zombie in a trance. Maidana knows how to cut off the ring and throws punches from awkward angles. He can also be very relentless. This could trouble Mayweather. Let's hope so.
