Trainer Nacho Beristain has advised former champion Rafael Marquez (41-9, 37KOs) to retire from boxing. Last Saturday in California, the the 38-year-old veteran took a beating from underdog Efrain Esquivias. The fight was stopped in the ninth round, but not before Marquez took a lot of punishment and was dropped hard. He suffered a fractured orbital bone and had to be taken to the hospital afterwards.

Nacho, who recently reunited with Marquez, believes the four-fight series with Israel Vazquez took a heavy toll on his boxer's body.

everything Nacho said was correct//Marquez showed absolutely nothing. good GBP gave him the shot but they need 2 get in2 it also , as I'm sure in the contract there's something about performance...he's fought 2 bouts 2 much as the Mijares tko loss took it's toll 2....

that other guy was tested, and he lost. 16-2-1 going into the fight. losses to jonathan romero and rico flippin ramos. most of his fights were at the "doubletree hotel" in ontario california [whatever that is.]


marquez is all done. what esquivas did on saturday wasn't remarkable. he did his job against a fighter who looked absolutely ancient. marquez' legs looked like they were being controlled by somebody else.

I agree with him. Esquivas won the fight fair and square, but Rafa was nothing more than a punching bag at that point. Rafa should've hung em up after the Mijares fight.

Did you even watch the fight? Calling someone else a new age fan, when it seems clear as day you haven't seen Rafa Marquez fight before is a bit rich mate.

Marquez was so shot he couldn't get out of the way of anything. He would have made this guy look like what he actually is only a few years ago still....a fringe contender.

he wasn't gonna go any further than that
that win didn't even seem all that meaningful, but it was closure
not sure why he's gone on unless his brother's aged run has inspired him
but he damn well better give it up now, he's gonna be punch drunk
