  • Comments Thread For: Team Shumenov: We Were Never Offered Cleverly Fight

Hall of Fame promoter Don Chargin, advisor for World Boxing Association ("WBA") and International Boxing Association ("IBA") light heavyweight World champion Beibut Shumenov, has responded to a press release issued by Frank Warren Promotions that claimed Shumenov turned down a unification offer to fight World Boxing Organization ("WBO") titlist Nathan Cleverly.

The press release announced that Cleverly will be defending his WBO title February 25 against Tommy Karpency in Wales. It also claimed: An offer went to WBA title-holder Beibut Shumenov to face Cleverly, but he said he would not be ready in time - although it could happen later this year. [Click Here To Read More]

To unify is a rare achievement. Clev should just fight him in the US. He's got the skills and it would be a good cross-over fight for when he inevitably has to face Pascal/Cloud/Dawson/Hopkins/Sillaykh et al.

These bum defences in the UK do him no favours.

that's silly man. Cleverly should defend the one single WBO belt for 10 years then take on a jeff lacy type of opponent and be considered an all time great. way too soon for a challenge now

wow! warren lying about offering a 13 fight world champ a unification fight in vegas. seems like a bad move if he has any hope that his charge is the real deal, could have been a huge move for cleverly

Of course they've spun it around on the "other" fighter claiming he was unavailable so blahblahblah..........
They've got the paperbelthostage handbook and they're running it step-by-step.

Who cares? who is Shumenov anyway? He got his belt in a total robbery, I don't rate him at all at 175.

              Come on clev!

Beibut is and has been ready to take on Clev. The welcome mat has been put out and any time Clev is willing to come to Vegas I am sure Shumenov would be more than happy to give him the welcome he deserves. Man up Cleverly, at least be honest about the fact that you did not take this fight. This doesn't look good.............And to top it off, you disrespecting a man like Mr. Don Chargin is a bunch of ****.

does he? he's got the hype but the skills? he looked terrible against bellow and i scored that fight a draw. this tommy guy is probably the right level of opponent for him. if he steps up he probably loses.

He looked good against Abraham Jr Murat (who admittedly was somewhat impressive against Campillo), but terrible against the French guy, and not much better in his last 2 bouts. Shumenov is no great shakes either, this is a winnable fight for both guys. Though it's interesting that Shumenov robbed Campillo blind in Vegas and not in Kazakhstan.

Because Warren is involved, I can believe this, he is the master of protecting his money makers and regularly meets WBO officials in quiet car parks to "continue to build a relationship"...
