  • Comments Thread For: Ola Afolabi Promises To Return Stronger After Huck Loss

New York—Although cruiserweight Ola Afolabi had his five-fight win streak snapped at the hands of Marco Huck in their 12-round WBO title tilt on Saturday in Germany, both Afolabi and his promoter Dino Duva believe the British-born fighter illustrated that he belongs with the elite of the division. Very good to hear! Ola has to improve now with a good new trainer!
Give 200 % in training ! It was entertaining all the clowning from ola, but he should win these rounds! Ola will be back!

Doesn’t he train with Roach? I think he has some great defensive skills but he has a sparring partner mentality, he has sparred with some really good fighters like Toney, Bhop, Arreola, Wlad etc. If he can up his work rate he could win a full title.

Afolabi is not a bad fighter, he just needs to stop showboating so much .

Just watched the fight (a nice quality version is on youtube) and Ola Afolabi looks like he has a lot of potential.

He made Huck look pretty poor, but did not capitalise. He threw far too few punches to win the fight despite looking quite effective when he did throw and hurting Huck badly in the 5th (for the record, there was no knock down). But he took entire rounds off without throwing anything meaningful - bizarrely the 6th when you would have thought he should be pouncing back on Huck. Too much clowning around and not enough focus definitely cost him dearly here, there can be no argument with the decision.

He needs a trainer who can show him combination punching - he didn't throw a single combination for 12 rounds - as well as get him to shorten up his punches and teach him how to slip and counter, then he'll be a real danger to any cruiserweight out there. Until he improves though the clowning around is going to count against him.

He's got good reflexes, head movement, a strong guard, and picks out some really great punches from time to time - the uppercut that hurt Huck in the 5th was a beauty. Obviously a bit of a natural, given his lack of amateur experience.

Huck looked pretty one dimensional and it's much harder to see how he can improve beyond what he showed in this fight.

he whooped huck in rd. 5? what are you talking about?! huck owned him until the final 30 seconds where afolabi clearly headbutted him then started throwing punches once he say huck was rocked from the headbut.. he's not disciplined and throws wide punches, will never beat an elite fighter in the top of the divison, will just be a gatekeeper like librado andrade no doubt.
