I wish Bread would have addressed the last questioner's point about RJJ fall-off being as much due to blows taken from Ruiz as the weight drop. IMO there is a drop off from punishment taken but its not the same for all fighters. Also, part of it can be mental; self-doubt leading to hesitation and reluctance to pull the trigger and another part can actually be due to some minor brain damage leading to reduced punch resistance.
Recent fall-offs - Joshua after the first Ruiz loss - mostly mental. Jarrett Hurd - both mental and damage - never been the same.

Hmm interesting, Hagler vs Hopkins, I'd say Hagler.

Hagler vs prime Roy Jones, one may favour Roy, but Hagler had a way of getting to a flashy, quick handed fighter.

Too many commentaries about Canelo and Bud WITHOUT saying they BOTH need to drop the belts if they aren't going to fight the best competition in their weight classes. Crawford holding onto the belts especially doesn't make sense since he doesn't appear to have any interest in staying at 147.

They're both holding onto belts as long as possible as leverage for negotiations. Fights sell better and fighters make more when they can say that they're the whatever champion of the world. That's why it was so important to Jermell to get introduced vs Canelo as undisputed, and the WBO agreed not to strip him until AFTER the opening bell. And, at least in Bud's case, it's possible the bigger fights for him after he fights for the WBO 154 will be back at 147. It would be ****** to drop the belts and the corresponding 75% purse split guarantee they provide in purse bids unless he's sure he's moving up for good, and Bud is obviously chasing the biggest money fights now.

The most important thing anyone can do, when chasing Bud or Canelo, is be a dance partner that will help sell seats and PPV buys. They're not Inoue. They don't use their status to make the big fights against the top contenders, they use it to make the biggest paydays. They're prizefighters, not athletes.

Boxing isn't really a sport. It doesn't have fully standardized rules. Imagine if football had different rules about what kind of gear you could wear, or what ball you could use, what size field, and totally arbitrary blind scoring with no video review and no real appeal process that varied widely from game to game, so you never knew whether it was more important to try to score touchdowns/goals, or defend and control the field, etc. Would you call that a real sport?

Belts are leverage for more money, plain and simple.

Not even close. It's not as if Canelo is moving up, he is literally fighting the weakest contender for far less money. Crawford as the unified welterweight gives him the right to challenge the next weight-class up. As different as apples and oranges.

If I were to favour Roy over Marvin it would be primarily down to size. Mid ‘90’s middleweights weren’t necessarily the same fight weight as ‘70’s - 80’s middleweights and, by Roy’s own admission, he used to take full advantage of that extra rehydration window. The deciding factor might be what weigh-in system they compete under. Hagler had a long career comfortably making 160lbs the morning of the fight. He was a real, natural middleweight. Jones wasn’t and, if he was required to do the same, might be so depleted in the ring he gets chopped up within 6.

Winky was a career 154 pounder, oscar before he went to 154 didnt have to fight him.

Winky had his first night on the big stage with Vargas, its been a long time but I remember thinking Winky won and a lot of people did too, even if you want to say he lost then he barely lost or should be a draw.

Anyways after that fight Winky was not on HBO, he was stuck back on ESPN land fighting the lower names, Vargas was supposed to be the next big star not winky so they cast him aside for several years.

Mosley had some balls giving Winky a shot at his titles because he could have avoided that fight, that win is what got Winky back in the limelight.

Winky for Oscar was high risk low reward and he wasnt about that. He didnt want that fight.

You can say Oscar fought everyone which he fought a lot but what he really fought were big PPV fights. Of all the people who were "allowed" to beat him, they were all big PPV earners except maybe Hopkins whom they were bringing in under their wing and trying to make him a star. You look at Sturm who clearly won the fight but was not "allowed to win" against Oscar and you can see how they managed his career. Oscar would take a risk if he could sign you goldenboy and make money off your future fights, thing is that Winky wasnt a big PPV star but high risk, you would have gotten another Sturm result if they fought.

Very easy to jump on the "Canelo is ducking Benevidez" bandwagon cause Bene's been making so much noise to that extent and he's been the #1 contender for so long, but having reviewed Benevidez's highlights it's pretty clear to me that Canelo was being perfectly honest when he said David doesn't have anything to offer him in a fight. If you look at the tape David's boxing IQ is simply trash, he constantly drops his hands and relies entirely on his ability to put fighters to sleep, which he fails to do on a regular basis. He honestly wouldn't be in consideration for a Canelo fight if their division was actually competitive.
