The sport is bad because everyone is on 2 or 3 fighters' dck. Everyone is sitting back waiting for the Canelo retirement check to fall into their lap.

I agree with paulie statements, 100 co sign and I’ll add to it the “fans “ demand: Canelo has to face every single one or he’s not a “real “ champion and some comparison to the “ol skoo” eras. Blah blah yeah These mfers gotta fight each other to produce a worthy challenger

That might be the most powerful jab Paulie has ever thrown.

PBC reportedly pushing for Canelo vs Jaime Munguia in May
Canelo has two fights remaining on his promotional deal with PBC, which began with last September’s decision win over Jermell Charlo
By Patrick Stumberg Updated Feb 21, 2024, 5:35pm EST

With just over two months remaining until Canelo Alvarez’s next scheduled bout, there’s little indication of who will actually welcome the Mexican superstar back to the ring. Canelo recently insisted that he’d be facing an American, with The Ring naming Jermall Charlo as his opponent, but Charlo himself took to social media to deny that any negotiations took place.

Now, ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez reports that PBC is ready to pay Canelo’s (60-2-2, 39 KO) $35 million guarantee if he fights Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KO), but not if he insists on Charlo. The “other option,” Rodriguez claims, is Canelo pursuing options with other promoters.

Canelo signed a three-fight deal with Al Haymon and co. last year and intended to kick things off against Charlo, who ruled himself due to lack of preparation. Canelo instead fought his brother Jermell in September, dropping and dominating the former undisputed super welterweight champion over the course of twelve rounds.

Mauricio Sulaiman recent came out and said he’d enforce Canelo’s long-overdue mandatory defense against interim champion David Benavidez, but did not specify whether that applied to the May date. He is also Mauricio Sulaiman.

If he does not fight David Benavidez next, it’s as clear-cut a duck as you’re likely to see. That said, Munguia is an exponentially more appealing opponent than Charlo, who’s shown no desire to fulfill his responsibilities as middleweight champion or, frankly, fight a warm body. Pushing for Munguia over Charlo is the correct financial move on PBC’s part.

We’ll see how it plays out.

David Benavidez vs Oleksandr Gvozdyk interim title fight in play
The winner of David Benavidez vs Oleksandr Gvozdyk would be in line to challenge the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol
By Patrick Stumberg Feb 22, 2024, 4:54pm EST

Mauricio Sulaiman revealed on Twitter today that the WBC has sanctioned an interim light heavyweight title fight between current interim super middleweight titlist David Benavidez and former unified champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk. Though Sulaiman treats the matchup as a done deal, Jake Donovan reports that this is a “contingency plan” for Benavidez if he can’t secure a showdown with Canelo Alvarez.

Donovan also implies that this is not a permanent move in weight, as the plan is for Benavidez (28-0, 24 KO) to simultaneously be the mandatory challenger in both weight classes. With Sulaiman disinterested in forcing Canelo’s hand, this is probably “The Mexican Monster’s” most expedient route to a title shot, and I’m all for watching him tear it up with Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol.

That said, while it’s a smart move, it’s also a risky one. Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KO) has yet to be tested since ending his three-year retirement, with Ricards Bolotniks serving as his most noteworthy scalp, but he’s a nasty boxer-puncher when he’s on. Benavidez’s ambition deserves to be commended, as does his refusal to just sit on the sidelines and get yanked along.

Benavidez Forces Canelo’s Hand: $55 Million Offer On The Table
                    By Will Arons - 02/22/2024

David Benavidez’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, has made a power move, reporting that Al Haymon’s PBC has offered undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez a gigantic $55M guaranteed purse offer for the two to fight next.

                    A Questionable Pay Increase

It’s a staggering amount of money that is being offered to Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs), but only a small bump up in pay from the $35 million low-risk fight that PBC is offering Alvarez to face Jaime Munguia for his next fight date on May 4th.

That’s a slam-dunk win for Canelo, as Munguia is an easy mark, but it will sell to casuals in the U.S. Benavidez isn’t an easy one for Canelo, and it’s worth far more than $55 million; perhaps in the $100 million range. If Canelo were to agree to the $55 million, he would be short-changing himself.

If Canelo declines the offer from PBC, Benavidez will move up to 175 and face light heavyweight Oleksandr Gvozyk for the interim WBC title and mandatory spot to put himself in a position to challenge for the undisputed championship against the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol winner.

Canelo’s Options: PBC or Saudi Riches?

Canelo can reject the $55 million from PBC, and go his own way towards big money fighting in Saudi Arabia. The money that British fighters are making in Saudi is enormous, and Canelo can get in on the action and make considerably more dough than the $55 million that PBC is offering for him to take the risky fight against Benavidez, who they’re trying to turn into a PPV attraction.

Thus far, they’ve not succeeded. Benavidez’s last fight against Demetrius Andrade reportedly did poor numbers on Showtime PPV. Of course, it doesn’t help when Benavidez is fighting older fighters like Andrade instead of young talents like David Morrell Jr.

The money Canelo can make fighting in Saudi Arabia far exceeds the $55 million that PBC is offering him to fight the much bigger and younger Benavidez, which doesn’t balance out. PBC must get the balance right to entice Canelo to accept the fight with Benavidez by offering him $100 million.

For the average fan, $55 million sounds like a lot, but now for a fight of the magnitude of Canelo vs. Benavidez. This is Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao all over again, but this would have more reach and be considerably more entertaining.
