Boxing fans want Canelo Alvarez to fight David Benavidez, but has what Canelo done in his career earned him the right to pass on Benavidez, or does he need to take on his biggest rival?

If you're a world champion, and you're making a killing off the back of your fans, you owe them fights against the very best (or the most called out opponent) - especially if you've been cherry picking opponent after opponent essentially since getting past GGG. You can't parade yourself as the very best if your resume doesn't reflect this. Canelo is going to the HOF, but he needs at least one more matchup against a legendary opponent to be considered legendary. The only highly respected fighter that he fought and beat who was near the top of their game was GGG. He lost against Mayweather and the verdict is still out on Bivol.

I'm sorry, but Canelo owes us against Benavidez....or Crawford.

Canelo loved fighting guys on the wrong side of 30, but now that he's at that stage, suddenly he doesn't owe us anything? Bull****. This is a fight that fans actually want. He definitely owes it to the fans.

We haven't forgotten the gifts and suspect decisions in his career. He owes us being on rhe receiving end of a few more beatings.

his grand-kids won't ask him who he ducked - obviously. Doh!

But boxing historians will most definitely allude to it for decades

Sorry Mr. Raskin. Saul either owes it to the fans to fulfill his mandatories OR give up the belts to continue to fight WHO HE WANTS. The onus in mostly on Alvarez and also the crooked belt orgs for allowing this miscreant

If the Champs owes us nothing then they should retire and have exibition fights (Canelo has tthe 2 Davids and Crawford has Boots). Stop holding up the divisions when u have up and coming stars that are willing to take on new challenges. Boxing is the only sport where u become Champion and then u pick and choose who u want to defend against oppose to fighting the next best guy. mma > boxing in that aspect all day.

fair enough but also fans owe boxing nothing hence why it seems like everyone is flocking to watch MMA now, especially the new generation coming up

If he doesn't fight Benavidez that is the definition of a duck: avoiding the best competitor IN YOUR OWN WEIGHT CLASS. If you're gonna duck, at least drop the belts because you aren't UNDISPUTED if you're ducking the #1 contender. Go fight exhibition matches or something.
