  • Comments Thread For: Vergil Ortiz Doesn't 'Think It Was A Bad Stoppage,' Says Weeks Saved Lawson From 'A Bad Knockout'

Vergil Ortiz Jr. initially thought that Tony Weeks stopped his fight with Fredrick Lawson too soon Saturday night. In hindsight, Ortiz realized that the veteran Nevada referee probably spared Lawson from suffering a brutal knockout defeat in their 12-round, 156-pound fight at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. Weeks has drawn intense criticism for stepping

Yes, probably Vergil, but it's boxing, not table tennis, which I love by the way.

Don't even know why they keep hiring Weeks in the first place.

This begs the question: should Standing Counts and 3 Knockdown Rules be in effect?

This would eliminate bad stoppages like this, and give boxers a firm goal- knock him down 3 times, or cause 3 standing counts, and win the fight.

[I do feel sorry for Weeks. He looked like he instantly regretted stopping the fight.]

Most importantly, it would ensure the fans the excitement they pay for. That was a refundable product..

Much better than a news like "Lawson admitted in intensive care after getting knocked out by Ortiz. To undergo test for suspected brain damage"

IMO, after seeing the video, Lawson was about to be crushed with very hard punches. I thought Weeks did the right thing to save him from further damage. But a 10 count would have proved this. Standing 10 counts might have been good here. The Rolly fight was probably a jump the gun stoppage. In the heat of battle sometimes to err on the side of safety might be for the best. Though not crowd pleasing.

the refers job is to protect the fighters at all times and that is what he did he protected the fighter from himself.............but i am not talking about Lawson being protected Weaks protected Ortiz from himself..........you can not expect a man that took three years just to make weight without landing in the hospital to go more then three minutes in his first fight back from blood disorders and all that so Weaks was doing what he got paid to do.......

If that was the worry they could have kept lawson in the dressing room. He was obviously outgunned from the opening bell.
