  • Comments Thread For: What Happens Now That Jake Paul Lost?

By Corey Erdman - Three weeks before his bout against Tommy Fury, Jake Paul appeared on HBO's Game Theory, and was asked by host Bomani Jones "what happens if you lose one of these fights?" The query immediately bristled Paul, and the tense interaction it prompted created the latest in a long line of viral videos featuring Paul. The question itself was a simple one, the question that has been central to Paul's boxing career.

He'll probably go back to fighting YTers or MMA guys that are much smaller than him now that he saw what real boxing looks like. But credit to him. He finally fought a professional fighter, so he can be considered a professional fighter for the time being.

I knew Fury had won but I thought they would rob him to keep Paul going, glad they gave a real result.

He has a rematch clause with Tommy, and he can beat him.

Tommy is not the cruiserweight world champion. He himself said the Jake fight is his world title fight, like that.

Will say one thing, Jake does dedicate himself to the sport, learning, is a novice, but he's got some power. That's why Tommy was wary of Jake's power the whole fight.

I was one of his detractors, but now commend how he has gone about his business. He knows how to market himself, and makes much more money than far more accomplished fighters like the Charlo brothers, for example.

So how are these others promoted? How is Haney paid? Probably gets less than Paul.

We can all move on and talk about relevant boxing matches.

Figueroa Magsayo next weekend then Harrison Tszyu the weekend after that.

Cokeavidez vs Kale Plant on the 25th

          etc. etc.

Probably fights KSI or someone after Tommy beats him in a rematch, if it happens.

Tommy will run through him next time, no doubt. Weight off his shoulders now and he’ll smash Jake to bits. They probably know it too.

When the dust settles, I’ll be surprised if Jake even takes the rematch with Tommy Fury. He can probably make just as big or bigger money against KSI or Nate Diaz.

More winnable fights for probably more money? Sounds like a no brainer.

Boring. Who cares about these nobodies except a few nerds on boxing forums?

Boxing has moved on. Now it’s about events in Saudi Arabia with social media stars. Get with the times, it’s here to stay

“Real Boxing” killed itself with TV networks and promoters not working together, a dozen champs per division, the best fights not being made, overpriced subscription services etc etc. it’s over. The public trying to get into boxing can’t even get their heads around the mess that the boxing business has become

it’ll continue to die and overtaken by these standalone events in Saudi.

We might not see it so clearly at this moment in time but the next generation of pro’s that have grown up in the social media age will be plotting on raising their profile via social media to make that quick money rather than go the “traditional route”. Tommy Fury has set the standard.

the world has changed, the way to attain fame and money has shifted and that’ll consume boxing completely in the next decade. Young boxers growing up today will see a completely different route via boxing that involves social media fame and fights and it’ll become the norm. Traditional boxing industry structure will look archaic within the next 5-10 years and be phased out, it’s not profitable enough, it’s just in the past there wasn’t a bigger alternative, now there is.

I would offer a counterpoint. What was Jake Paul’s biggest public beef with Dana White? It was that the fighters were not getting paid/taken care of enough. Personally I could see a world where old boxing dies and is replaced by someone like Jake Paul as the promoter that makes fights and takes care of fighters. Long shot? Of course. The difference between my view and yours is that mine has some hope. I want to see the boxing business as we know it now DIE!!

It's sad but you're probably right. The internet and social media have completely fscked up everything I've ever been interested in. Be it boxing, skateboarding, music etc. It's all about self-promotion, branding and every other disgusting thing that is now important in our 'modern world'
