  • Comments Thread For: Robert Garcia: Anthony Joshua Should Have Started His Pressure Earlier

Veteran trainer Robert Garcia, who worked the corner of Anthony Joshua for his recent rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, believes the British star could have closed the show had he applied a lot of pressure two or three rounds before the big ninth.

He would have been ko'ed then, either he would have pushed harder or earlier

AJ is unable to pressure fight cuz he doesn't trust his own chin.
There's a reason he was talking about "going 12 rds" and "winning two more rounds" to beat Usyk.

There's always 1 returded judge to give the loser a false sense of accomplishment.

            Usyk won by 5 rds

He did as good as he could under curcumstances. Maybe if fight was in England Josh could rise to occasion

He wasn't overly close to KOing Usyk in the 9th.

This inflating of AJ by his trainers in both fights that he's winning or close to, is part of the psychological problem with AJ.

Demand your fighter goes out there, roughs his opponent up, some dirty boxing, lean on him, enforce his size and will.

That didn't really come through much more than before.

“But we could have done more, throw the jab with more power. Throw his straight right hand more solid, throw his 1-2 combo more frequently."

What the entire boxing world seems to be missing is that when Joshua did throw, Usyk often made him miss

Usyk wasn’t even badly hurt in the 9th, he was a bit buzzed maybe but he was more flustered than anything. He starts moving frantically when he’s like that, which can make it seem like he’s hurt.

Anyway I said it before the fight, AJ is a timid fighter now. You can talk a good fight and everything but once you get in the ring it’s really hard to overcome that timidness that you have developed. They’re just expecting him to do things that mentally he’s not willing or capable of doing, and that’s before you even get into stamina problems and things like that.
