  • Comments Thread For: Vergil Ortiz-Michael McKinson Now Sanctioned As WBA Welterweight Title Eliminator

Golden Boy Promotions has taken additional measures to ensure that a world title fight is within reach for Vergil Ortiz. The stakes have been raised for the rescheduled clash between Ortiz and England's Michael McKinson. The winner of Saturday's DAZN main event will be named the mandatory challenger to the WBA welterweight title, Golden Boy Promotions confirmed Thursday.

Isn’t Stanionis WBA mando at 147 after his last fight?

I wonder if the top contenders Ennis and Ortiz Jr realise that both Spence and Crawford are leaving the welterweight division, whether they have their superfight or not.

Could this have anything to do that there was hardly any interest in this fight? It just seems random that all of a sudden they declare it as a title eliminator. Regardless, I don't see neither guy that wins fighting Spence or Crawford after this. Those two are going to end up moving to 154 by next year. If that ends up being the case, where does this leave Ortiz? The title eliminator should have been Ortiz and Ennis given their rankings.

He is. The winner of this fight will be mandatory to Stanionis. It's pointless really, as after Spence v Crawford, the belts most likely get vacated, and in Ortiz case he's guaranteed to fight for a vacant title anyway.

Exactly. So their guaranteed a title shot anyway, without eliminators

Who cares? Leo Santa Cruz didn't defend his WBA featherweight title for almost 4 years and somehow he's not stripped of his title yet. WBA is a joke.

A fight against Eimantas Stanionis at the end of the year sounds like a pretty good fight to me, many most had seen him in the undercard of Ugas vs Spence against Butaev, also Vergil Ortiz Jr knows Butaev relatively well as he sparred him along with Madrimov for his fight against Kavaliauskas.

If he gets his belt Keith Thurman might be enticed into fighting Vergil Ortiz Jr possibly early next year.
