  • Comments Thread For: David Benavidez - Third Time's The Charm?

By Cliff Rold - Someone had to be the one. Lots of guys wanted to be next up for Saul Alvarez after the super middleweight king completed his unification of the division in 2020. No matter what he decided to do, we know now it was going to be a multi-fight package.

As someone who hates the politics of boxing but loves the sport, I could care less about the stupidity around these worthless belts. They are watered down and just promotional fodder, meaning very little. WHO you fight is more important. No one cares at the end of your career how many titles you owned. The resume of top competition is what matters.

Benavidez does not have a great resume yet. He cannot just wait around expecting Alvarez to call his name. He is just not in that place. If he wins this tussle, getting the other former champs dispatched by Alvarez and beating them soundly is the only way to get himself where he wants to be. Be active, be disciplined in your training, and make yourself the obvious choice. Being a paper champion in waiting at 168 means zero.

      You're wrong.

People are recognized by their accomplishments.

      Winning titles is an accomplishment.

When you look at fighter's resumes, they tell you about how many titles a guy won and how many successful defences a guy had.

GGG had a piss poor resume before he fought Jacobs and Canelo but was recognised as a top 5 p4p because of the number of successful defenses he had of his titles.

There are many other examples of this.

      Like for instance Pacquiao.

When people talk about Pacquio, the first thing you hear is eight division world champion".

      World titles matter.

Get em up Get em up likes this.

The jury is still out on Benavidez imo. Yes he has looked impressive, but exclusively against faded and/or B level opponents. And Lemieux is just more of the same. The guy hasn’t beat a top fighter his whole career.

I agree with you here. People say titles and repeat defences are meaningless but the way I see it is if can manage to defend a title over and over it shows character and discipline. At the title level the guys in the ring stand out amongst hundreds if not thousands of fighters that only wish they were on that level. Even the not so good ones are at least standing across from said title holder. There's a whole gang of fighters we will never know they exist so it's an accomplishment to defend a title no matter who you do it against IMO

"banned recreational drugs" lol, cocaine is a performance enhancer. Not a recreational drug unless you're one of the few who can manage the psychological addiction it creates. That's quite irresponsible of the author. He was using during training camp.

"After last use, cocaine or its metabolites typically can show up on a blood or saliva test for up to 2 days, a urine test for up to 3 days, and a hair test for months to years. A heavy user can test positive on a urine test for up to 2 weeks."
