NEW YORK - Galal Yafai continues to thrive in the infancy of his pro career. The 2020 Olympic Gold medalist from Birmingham, England made quick work of Philadelphia's Miguel Cartagena, forcing a stoppage after two lopsided rounds of action. Cartagena was battered to the point of his corner disallowing him to continue their flyweight bout Saturday evening at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The infancy of his career? A 30 year old flyweight is an old man. Galal needs the fast track.

'The infancy of his career? A 30 year old flyweight is an old man. Galal needs the fast track.'

A lot of the old orthodoxy, that small men are old at 30, Welters & Middles at 32, LHW & up at 34 is just that, old. You've got to remember that today's fighters know far more about nutrition, health etc than their forebears, also they fight far less frequently.

Galal is being fast-tracked, I think, less because of age & more because of an understanding that if a guy is an Olympic Gold Medallist it is silly, & just wasting time, to make him fight 10 or 12 knockover opponents before he gets a competitive fight. I think British managers look at, particularly, the dreadful mess of Audley Harrison's career.

In the 2000s there was no way they would've put a 1-0 gold medallist in with a guy like Cartagena, but now they understand that a good boxer who isn't challenged will stagnate & can actually regress in ability. It is good that they are trying to make everyone of Galal's fights a big deal.

If you're an Olymic medallist you're not too far off being an elite fighter (unless you got the medal via corruption or faced poor opposition)

Fast track him. Let's see where his ceiling really is

Which is why he should be matched with Tommy Frank, Jay Harris & maybe Prince Patel before the years out!
