  • Comments Thread For: Ian John-Lewis Downgraded by BBBoC In Wake Of Taylor-Catterall Scoring Controversy

Ian John-Lewis has been downgraded by the British Boxing Board of Control in the wake of the controversial Josh Taylor-Jack Catterall fight, a decision that is likely to affect his chances of refereeing or judging a world title fight in the future. Outrage followed Catterall's split decision loss to Taylor for the undisputed world super-lightweight title on February 26. Lindsay Hoyle, the speaker of the House of Commons who is also Catterall's local MP, even referred the matter to the police.

Satisfied that his scorecard did not affect the overall result? If he would have scored the fight justly we'd have a new unified World Champ.

And to suggest he's still A Class even after the downgrade after years of submitting home cooked scoring cards is an absolute travesty!

How is that man still in a job after so publicly humiliating his employer?

What about the one that threw the towel back out, that was egregious.

I'm sure the bags of cash that he's accrued over the years will soften the blow. Probably get a golden handshake from MTK as well. The likes of him and Adelaide Byrd should be walking circles in an exercise yard at Her Majesty's pleasure somewhere.

If I was a boxer, I'd refuse to move forward if I was told a sketchy judge would be scoring my fight.

Whilst the Board were satisfied that Mr. John-Lewis’s scorecard did not affect the overall result of the contest, the Stewards of the Board did have issue with his margin.
So this is just lip service, damage control, using IJL as a shield

“Having considered Mr Ian John-Lewis’s explanation, the Stewards of the Board decided to downgrade Mr John-Lewis from an A Star Class to an A Class Official.

Oh well that settles it then I guess! How pathetic is this? Why are they even calling referees "A Star" referees? This is highly unnecessary ego stroking and probably only makes it easier for these incompetent and/or corrupt clowns like Ian John-Lewis to turn in outrageous scorecards. These people are not "stars". They are referees. They are officials. The boxers are the stars. The BBBC needs to discontinue elevating these regular officials to "star" status. That's not helping anything. On top of that, now he's just an "A Class" official. What a punishment. He's still going to be working as a ref and judge on lower level fights. Does it make it any more right that he still has the ability to ruin a fighter's career who's not yet on world level? A bogus scorecard is damaging to the competitors in the sport as well as the integrity of the sport regardless of whether it's for a UK, international or world level bout. The only people who saw Taylor beating Caterall were John-Lewis, Loughlin (from Scotland), Bias Ben Davison and probably Taylor's family and friends.

“Whilst the Board were satisfied that Mr. John-Lewis’s scorecard did not affect the overall result of the contest, the Stewards of the Board did have issue with his margin.

This is just total nonsense. The entire world and everyone ringside saw Caterall win that fight but John-Lewis scoring the fight for Taylor didn't affect the overall result of the contest? What an embarrassment to the boxing world that the BBBC thinks that people are dumb enough to accept that explanation. Clearly the board is just protecting itself and is incapable of disciplining out of control officials. They need a complete overhaul. They are more concerned with their reputation (which is already in the toilet) than the livelihood of the boxers who compete under their umbrella. Absolutely inexcusable.

Mills Lane in his current physical condition would do a better job than some of these referees / judges.
