  • Comments Thread For: Hrgovic Still In Search Of Foe For IBF Eliminator; Gassiev, Ruiz Cite Injuries In Declining Offer

The process to secure an opponent for Filip Hrgovic is creeping closer to the one heavyweight on record who is willing to accept the assignment. BoxingScene.com has learned that former titlists Murat Gassiev and Andy Ruiz Jr. are the latest to decline an invitation to enter talks for an IBF title eliminator with Croatia's Hrgovic. Gassiev and Ruiz were required to inform the New Jersey-based sanctioning body by January 21 as to whether they were available to pursue such a fight, though both cited injury rehabilitation as the cause for their lack of availability. The IBF has yet to confirm the removal of Gassiev and Ruiz Jr. from the process or whether a similar approach will be taken of contacting two heavyweights at a time. The latter would mean that Australia's Demsey McKean (20-0, 13KOs) and China's Zhilei Zhang (21-0-1, 13KOs) are on deck.

DAZN has featured Zhang on some undercards, he even has small pockets of fans that show up, why not

          Hilarious.

No one wants to fight Hrgovic for pennies in an eliminator for mandatory that might not be called for years.

They should just declare Hrgovic the mandatory, honestly.

This has been absolutely absurd. Zhang has said he'd be willing to fight him, IIRC they're in the same promotional stable or at least have aired on the same platform lately, and most importantly it would actually be a decent fight. They should have just gone straight to that once the first round of suggested opponents fell through.

The fight is for the IBF title shot . Hrgovic isn’t going to accept a mandatory handed to him because then he is unable to take a fight .

Hrgovic is all about improvement, he has the tools, he needs to keep honing his skills. Mando spot? Why not? He can still fight someone else in between, he just can't lose.

Yeah excuses, excuses! Why they all so afraid of this guy?? He really doesn’t seem to be that good, he’s a bit sloppy in his defense, he can punch, sure but he ain’t no massive KO puncher. Must be a low reward, high risk type scenario? Either way, it’s ridiculous! I say just give Charles Martin the shot, I’m sure he will jump at the chance. Sure he is coming off a loss, but he is still at number 10 in the rankings and he gave a very good account of himself against Ortiz, he got caught…but that could happen to any heavyweight. Give him the chance, I’m sure he would take it and it wouldn’t surprise me if he beats Hrgovic either.
