  • Comments Thread For: Joe Smith Breaks Down, Drops, Stops Steve Geffrard in Ninth

By Keith Idec - It took Joe Smith Jr. a little longer than odds indicated it would, but the heavily favored champion eventually exposed huge underdog Steve Geffrard on Saturday night. Smith stopped Geffrard early in the ninth round of a scheduled 12-round, 175-pound championship match

Steve Geffrard wasn't supposed to be here. Last Friday, he was preparing to weigh in for a fight in Delray Beach, Florida, when he received a call. WBO light heavyweight champion Joe Smith Jr. needed an opponent after British puncher Callum Johnson contracted COVID-19. (photos by Mikey Williams)

Geffrard answered the call and will fight Smith this Saturday evening at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. (ESPN, ESPN Deportes & ESPN+, 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT).

    • Joe Smith Jr. 174.25 lbs vs. Steve Geffrard 173.5 lbs
(Título Mundial Semipesado de la OMB — 12 Rounds)

    • Abraham Nova 126.75 lbs vs. William Encarnacion 127 lbs
    (Peso Pluma — 10 Rounds)

I will be in attendance. Was really looking forward to Callum Johnson, but Geffrard has been grinding and may surprise people how well he does. I'm still choosing Smith Jr to win the fight.

Does Geofrard have any kind of chance?

I saw his last fight against Denis Grachev and wasn’t too impressed honestly. I lean slim to none.

Joe Smith busted onto the scene by beating Andrzej Fonfara when few expected it, so who knows.

Either way, I hope he brings it & we get a good scrap
