  • Comments Thread For: Billy Joe Saunders 'Could Have Been Better...He Cut Corners,' Says Former Trainer

Mark Tibbs feels that his former trainee Billy Joe Saunders left a lot on the table as it relates to the latter's boxing career. The London-based Tibbs, a former fighter himself, trained the two-division champion Saunders ahead of his super middleweight unification bout against Canelo Alvarez last May, which Alvarez won by 8th round knockout.

Tibbs is right, Saunders had all the talent in the world but hes a lazy sod and always has been.

      Same with Fury tbh.

Saunders was good against Canelo, just his injury...

Klitschko had a big injury against Lewis and that's all.

He needs to take a tune up vs Makabu.

Then fight Rocky Fielding on UK for a ppv superfight.

Saunders on that night would have beaten an awful lot of fighters from many eras. Massive shame that his eye gave out. Tibbs isn't wrong though I paid money to watch BJS a few times and it wasn't always worth it. Stinking out The Copperbox against Munroe springs to mind. But then on the nights that mattered he was absolutely on point. Andy Lee was a good strong champion and he brushed him off over 12 like it was nothing. No one lines up to fight Lemieux. John Ryder gave Callum Smith nightmares. Even Blackwell was a warrior and put it on everyone he fought (even in defeats). Saunders dealt with those 3 with consummate ease. Haters are gonna hate and they've good reason to but you cannot deny Saunders had talent in abundance.

Has been since the amateurs. Him and Frankie Gavin were always p***ing about on the GB squad back in the day.

Saunders is one of the most gifted boxers this country has ever had but as you and Tibbs said never fully applied himself.

Top fighter for me. Maybe he could have been better but Canelo breaking his face with one shot isn't exactly a what if moment or something to undermine his boxing ability.

Best pound for pound fighter in the world mangles you with one shot. Boxing innit, really.

British trainers- all they know are new and creative ways to get their fighter's faces broken. Because they don't know sh.t about boxing
