Hookers. Murder. Boxing. Author Patrick Connor lays out the promise of all three right there in the title of his first book, "Shot at a Brothel: The Spectacular Demise of Oscar "Ringo" Bonavena," before delivering on the promise in a breezy, entertaining one hundred pages.

SHOT IN A BROTHEL is certainly worth reading. The author Patrick Connor keeps the narrative moving and doesn't get bogged down with lengthy descriptions of all of Bonavena's fights. He also doesn't make unfounded assumptions or try to sugar-coat the main characters. I would have liked to know how brothel owner Joe Conforte or his estranged wife ended up, as well as Bonavena's wife Dora and his two children, but that is a small criticism. This book is inexpensive and part of the Hamlicar Publishing's boxing/true crime book series. I recommend adding any of their books to your library. By the way, promoter Lou DiBella's production company released a film about this murder a few years ago that is worth a look.

God, boxers were bad lads in the 70s! Drugs, gambling, loose women, more drugs, brothels..... & Jermall gets grief for leaving a restaurant without paying because his card refused (& went back next day to pay).
