  • Comments Thread For: Guillermo Rigondeaux - Encore or Exit?

by Cliff Rold - Following a quiet, somewhat sad surrender in his December 2017 Jr. lightweight title challenge of Vasyl Lomachenko, it was easy to wonder if boxing has seen the last big chance for lineal Jr. featherweight king Guillermo Rigondeaux (20-1, 13 KO).

1 exciting fight does not an exciting fighter make. Rigo is adored by the fans that love the technical side of the sport. Those that love to see action in fights- which let's face it is the vast majority of combat sport fans- are not interested. My point is that it almost does not matter if he wins this weekend, or how well. He is who he is. He built his career around excellence, not dramatic fights. There is a place for him, but he is not now and he will never be a huge ratings magnet. The only massive rating fight he was in against Lomachenko was a turd on his part.

The way he approaches fighting he may have several good years left. He just will not have that much more to show for it. There are about half a dozen good fighters who because of the way they built their careers cannot get eyeballs to watch them fight, and as such cannot get great press or top level match-ups. He is among them.

Rigo was exposed by Lomachenco, a fight with Inoue or Donaire is interesting if he beats Casimero that is a big if.

Cant believe that the Donaire win was 8 years ago.

I think Casimero will knock his oldass out.

Casimero is not right mentally for this fight. Him and Silvervoice had a fight and they've ignored each other since then. Casimero seems depressed. Might be an off night for him.

I'd take Rigo by decision. Rigo is like +200 for this fight. Easy money to make if you like to bet.

Rigo hasn't had enough fights in his career for whatever reason. He's always in great condition even at 40, he is an explosive puncher and great boxer, but Casimero is a little Roberto Duran who will go for the KO. It will be interesting.
