  • Comments Thread For: Warren On Joyce-Takam Stoppage: If You're Not Throwing Shots Back, Ref Has No Alternative

Frank Warren doesn't think Steve Gray had much choice Saturday night. Carlos Takam condemned the British referee for stopping his heavyweight fight against Joe Joyce too soon. Gray stepped in to halt the action 49 seconds into the sixth round, with a staggered Takam still standing at Wembley Arena in London.

Standing count. Takam looked far from done.

Agreed. The stagger back with head up didn't help his cause, but he was avoiding shots and had been very competitive right till that salvo. British refs generally err on the side of caution which can be infuriating when compared to the US.

The Nash says as soon as Joyce landed his first meaningful punch of the fight, you could see A STAR crouching and looking at Takam, desperate to jump in. Would he have done that the other way around? Hell no. These A STAR referees get paid bonuses for home cooking, we all know this. Enjoy your bonus A STAR. Give Takam the rematch he deserves on neutral territory, Joyce. Joshua still owes Takam a rematch without the assistance of an A STAR as well. Nash out

I would prefer to see a fight stopped a bit too early than a bit too late but that was terrible, you cant stop a fight every time there is the slightest wobble without at least a standing count or warning.

why didn't it happen to pac-margarito when all margarito could do is to catch pac's punches without giving back?

Bunch of names on here seem soft on Joyce but are regular blowhards for one mid tier British HW with a dodgy history of failed drug tests and hitting the canvas. Maybe cuz Joyce isn’t with Matchroom? Just sayin…

When it's the other way around, when it's the home town hero, you have to darn near kill them. Warrington was out on his feet, up and down and staggering for most of the fight. Poor Mitchel, he bled a gallon and finally crumbled. Quick stops seem reserved for visitors.

Yes too much on the side of caution. It's ridiculous now. I guarantee If that had been Joshua on the receiving end it wouldn't have been stopped... Having said that Fury would have been stopped in the UK in the first Wilder fight - like Groves was against Froch. The ref literally jumps on you here to stop you getting up lol
