  • Comments Thread For: Junior Featherweight: A New Spirit of '96?

By Cliff Rold - It's not always easy to identify the beginning of something in boxing. As pieces come together in a weight class, or the span of a couple of classes, what appears tantalizing can evaporate rapidly. This Saturday on DAZN (10 AM EST), two of the best Jr. featherweights in the world will lock horns for two of the major alphabet straps available. After suffering COVID delays with so many since this time last year, 26-year old Murodjon Akhmadaliev (8-0, 6 KO) gets the chance to make his first defense of the WBA and IBF belts he won in January 2020.

Actually, add Moreno and Agbeko to the Rigondeaux timeframe for extra hilarity.

Notice this article doesn't even mention Castro.
    Pretty sure thats intentional.
Hopefully Arum puts the wayward WBO in its place for letting pbc run wild and places Castro and Conlan at their door.

Ryosuke Iwasa is a formidable rival, a strong first defense for Murodjon Akhmadaliev, even with a near two year layoff since COVID for the former 122 IBF Japanese champion. This clash has the potential for FOTY 2021, and could bring back that 90's feel. The weekend is looking good.

Akhmadaliev should rematch Roman, iirc Roman said he didn't have a full camp so maybe that affected him physically and mentally going into the fight

like PBC guys are eager to fight MJ who is on DAZN, he'll be left out in the cold, just like Crawfish at 47, or Tszyu or Madrimov at 54

Naoye Inoue needs to move into the same picture of 122 because at bantamweight there is nobody that will beat him. Not even Casimero who will get KO'd inside 4 rounds against Inoue with his reckless style that's tailor made for Inoue's composure and accurate power punching

This was a great walk into time. There are some true great names on that 1996 list. A few had slipped my mind. I tend to love the lower weight divisions, as we see the best tend to rumble with the best more often than at high divisions. There is not as much money below 130, so to earn real cash they have to fight each other. This class is a bit unproven, but there are a ton of great matches just waiting, and I bet we see most of them promotional politics be damned.

Naoya Inoue has ben exposed by Nonito Donaire so don't under estimate Johnriel Casimero he's named Quadro Alas for nothing.

118 with the Monster can be very good for a while Casi can do a lot if the fight happens and guys at 115 are getting noticed and may move up, lot of movement in those weight classes of really 108-118 they do bounce a bit. Opportunities is all. Good memories in the write up seems like a long time ago, hey wait it was a while ago now that I think of it. Still another good era of boxing to have been around to witness.
