  • Comments Thread For: Danny Garcia To Move Up To 154; Wants Thurman Rematch In New Division

Danny Garcia's six-year run as a welterweight appears to be nearing its expiration date, as the 32-year-old is eyeing a championship run in a new division. Garcia (36-3, 21 KOs) has been campaigning as a welterweight ever since his April 2015 majority decision win against Lamont Peterson. After beating Paul Malignaggi, Garcia captured the vacant WBC crown in 2016 when he scored a unanimous decision win over Robert Guerrero.

Guys at 154 will take the Garcia challenge. A fighter moving up and enough of a name to add to a resume.

This won't end up working out well. He has no chance against charlo, lubin, or castano and little chance against lara or jrock. He might be able to weasel his way into fighting for vacant belt against some bum, but he will never be a real champ at 154.

Garcia is too slow to beat a guy like Charlo, and not throwing enough punches in the pocket like he used to.

He's tough enough to take the abuse that Charlo will rain down on him.

Good luck Danny. As other fighters migrate from 154 > 160 I think that’s where your best shot is.

Time to retire for Danny. He didn’t show me enough against Spence to wanna See him again. Considering the guys are bigger at 154 and Spence made him gun shy, no thank you Danny. It was great seeing Danny fight but he’s not as hungry any more and it’s more of a cash grab from this point forward.

Most welterweights will meet him there within the next two years. Hell, that may give them even more of a reason to move up because I don't see any of them in a rush to face those bigger, rangy guys at 154...most of them are pushing 6'0, if not above it.

Current Welterweights average about 5'9 (if that), but most of them are barely 5'7. Good luck to all of them moving up...either they can bring their drama to 154 or get checked by some of the bigger guys in the division.

That's not a good idea, he should retire, he's not going to get a better opportunity than the Spence fight, he'll only decline from here, he's a 2 weight world champion, been in big fights, no point in continuing. A concern for Danny and making the right decisions is his dad, he's not a good trainer at all in my opinion, any good coach will preach upon footwork and doing the fundamentals, Garcia is a solid athlete, has a granite chin, hits very hard, is accurate, is a counter puncher, and punches in between a shots when the opponent throws a combination, which is a great skill, but his footwork, fundamentals, adaptability in terms of having the right game plan for a specific opponent, are all poor, he was as good as Crawford, Mikey, etc, as an amateur, has a style which should have been favourable in terms of adapting to the professionals, lives the life, has discipline, and if he'd had a good trainer, he'd have been more successful.
