  • Comments Thread For: Benavidez: Canelo Is Best At 168 Now, I'm The Second-Best; Plant Is Least Of The Champions

David Benavidez was in a much better position prior to his last fight to plead his case as the best super middleweight in the world. That stance softened the moment he stepped on a scale, weighing nearly three pounds above the 168-pound divisional limit, thus resulting in his becoming a former two-time WBC titlist before the opening bell. Benavidez went on to stop Alexis Angulo after the 10th round of a one-sided affair last August at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut where he returns to embark on a third title run.

    NSB?

Now, you've got all but one of the super middleweights saying that Canelo Alvarez is the best, above them.

Now, you've got basically every super middleweight trashing Plant, who many of you say is this world beater.

    What say ye?

Is it really a secret to anyone that 168 is a fairly weak division and that’s a primary reason why of the 4 divisions canelo has fought in, this is the one he finally decided he wanted to unify all the belts? That decision was made even easier when Benavidez screwed himself by losing his belt for being overweight.

How strong was 140 lbs when Crawford unified there?

If 168 lbs is so weak why hasn't Golovkin thought to move up and unify?

Why are Jermall Charlo and Caleb Plant avoiding Benavidez?

what does Crawford, charlo and golovkin have to do with my comment? Does bringing them up disprove what I wrote? Try and stay on topic little buddy.

You have to love Canelo. When you get to that level where you're just not losing and beating everyone, that the standards have been raised, even tho you're doing MORE than all the other surrounding fighters. If the critique is that he is cherry picking because he is taking on all undefeated title holders at 168, one by one, who haven't unified those belts with each other because they demand a boat load of money that wasn't there, then you're doing something right.

It's the same damn thing in every division. Unbeaten Belt holders not fighting each other. Pacquiao is the Canelo of 147. If he chose to make being undisputed his goal, he could be the middleman that gets these belts into one person's hands, since crawford and spence aren't doing it. Andrade and Charlo aren't doing it at 160. Just them two unifying would make them the undeniable next best fight for GGG, nevermind Canelo.

At 135, every undefeated guy is NOT fighting one another. Lopez, Garcia, Haney, Tank --- they're all finding ways to go look for opportunities elsewhere in other divisions.

And yet here is Canelo, a MONEY MAN, cherry picking fights Vs all undfeated Title holders lol. When he could just get one belt, hold on to it like they all do, and fight the next best contender of his Title's ranking system.

Also, name me the Title holders at the time Canelo was in their division, that he didn't fight? Who were they at 154 and 160?

              Thanks in advance.

maybe you have to love Canelo but I certainly don’t. I’ve followed boxing long enough to see through what he’s done. Ever since the Lara fight close to 7 years ago, he has really gone in the direction of minimizing risks. While ggg was a threat, he certainly waited that fight out. Other than that, nearly everyone canelo has fought has either been 35 and older (Cotto, ggg, Kovalev) have come off poor performances in their previous fight where they arguably could’ve lost (Jacobs, smith) , were given handicaps such as rehydration clauses and or short notice (Chavez jr, fielding, Jacobs, Kovalev) , or just weren’t very good (fielding, Yidilgrim, Kirkland Chavez jr).

as far as your other question about who he could’ve fought for belts, when canelo went back to 154 for a title, he picked Liam smith while a rematch with Lara or a match with either charlo bro could’ve happened as they all had belts. At 168, he could’ve went for smith instead of fielding who had a fake belt, but instead he didn’t fight smith for another two years which was after he got beat up by Ryder. At 175, clearly Kovalev was compromised and the weakest option which is why he bailed on that weight class immediately. At 160 he could’ve seriously pursued Andrade to unify as well as faced charlo as a mandatory but he opted for the franchise belt to avoid that. Lastly as I said, he didn’t show any desire to fight for the wbc belt at 168 when Benavidez had it but once the option became that it could be included as a free bee in his fight with smith and the only requirement being he had to fight Yidilgrim, he was suddenly on board. It’s really easy to see through canelos approach and how he minimizes risk. You just have to be paying attention.

I stopped reading at "weren't feeling very good". LOL. If you want your posts to be taken seriously, control yourself and don't over do it.

Again, in comparison to all the other surrounding Title holders, he is doing far MORE than they are despite being the one in position of power.

Not to belabor the point, but if the criticism is that he is fighting three undefeated title holders in one year, while none of them are fighting each other, then you are doing something right.

Also, you must think Canelo is some kind of Machiavellian genius to time all these fights just right, when fighters aren't "feeling well" (LOL again). Bunch of divas who want half a year of preparation for one fight. Either they complain that they weren't active enough after a poor performance, or they want over 12 weeks of training, something you don't need if you take care of yourself.
