MIAMI GARDENS, Florida - Eddie Hearn understands that a knockout defeat was inevitable for Avni Yildirim on Saturday night. Canelo Alvarez's promoter still would've preferred to see the Turkish contender continue after the third round in their scheduled 12-round, 168-pound title fight at Hard Rock Stadium. Challenging Alvarez was, after all, the opportunity of Yildirim's lifetime and he had waited nearly two years for his mandatory shot at the WBC super middleweight title.

I think he did, but they've tried to spin it that his corner stopped it.

After this poor showing; No governing body should ever sanction him to fight again. He needs his boxing license revoked. He simply cashed out in this bout. He never plan on attempting to win or at least be competitive. He was just focusing on the biggest pay day of his career. he didn't come to fight. He came to lay down and quit.

The outcome of the fight was obvious. Yildirim was taking a sustained beating and had he not quit he would have been knocked out. His handlers were right in stopping the fight since protecting his health and perhaps permanent consequences should come before his going out on his shield.

They shouldn't pay him the full amount, seriously, 25% would be about right.

Sheit, Avni was done after the KD. He jumped back up smiling, ready to go hug Canelo then and shake his hand.

And seriously, it needed to be stopped. Canelos shots were just getting more and more vicious. Dude was taking a beating

I mean even if he went another round, what was going to happen? Canelo was just going to continue to pummel him.

At least Yilidrim made 2.5M for this fight. Good for him and his team.

People pay money to see an entire fight. If it was just come out, spar a couple rounds, and if FighterA is better than FighterB as expected, then stop the fight ... few would pay for that. Part of the allure of combat sports is that a fighter can make up for a bad fight in just one second. In basketball, if a team is behind by 30 with 1 minute left, there's no coming back. However, a fighter can always come back and win with 1 minute left, regardless of how far behind he is.

There should be a huge purse fine for what Yildirim and his team did, because it is detrimental to the sport. He was clear-eyed, was not seriously cut, was not injured, was still fresh, had 9 rounds left to make something happen, etc. and he quit.
