Tampa, FL - Ask fans anywhere in the Tampa area their thoughts on the brightest newcomers in the sport, and the first fighter to spring to mind will be Keith Thurman (4-0, 4KO). The charismatic, hard-hitting welterweight was a gifted amateur, making it all the way to the 2008 Olympic Trials finals before falling just short of his dream to make the US Olympic Boxing squad.
But Thurman’s cloud claim with a silver lining. Electing to turn pro shortly after the trials, the Clearwater-based newcomer has literally been a knockout every time out, with all four of his pro fights to date ending in the first round.
Thurman looks to make it five straight when he returns to the ring on May 9. He will meet the toughest test of his young career when he squares off against tough-as-nails journeyman Jessie Davis. The four-round junior middleweight scrap serves as swing bout on next week’s ESPN2 Friday Nights Fights telecast, which airs live from the A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa, FL.
