Floyd Schofield impressed in his first fight under a co-promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions.

The talented 19-year-old prospect from Austin, Texas—aptly nicknamed ‘Kid Austin’—scored two knockdowns en route to a sixth-round stoppage of Rodrigo Guerrero. Schofield was credited with knockdowns in rounds three and four, with Guerrero taking considerable punishment before his corner decided to not let him out at the start of round six in their lightweight battle Saturday evening at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Guerrero agreed to the fight on roughly two weeks’ notice. The former IBF junior bantamweight titlist normally campaigns at 130 these days, though still deep in the twilight of his career regardless of weight. He accepted the assignment against a promising young boxer in Schofield, who put on a show in his Golden Boy debut.

Schofield—who is co-promoted by Davies Entertainment—set the tone early, rocking Guerrero in the opening round and effortlessly outworking the faded Mexican. He was awarded a third-round knockdown, though replays showed that it was more of a push as Guerrero was knocked off balance following a glancing blow to his shoulder.

A more convincing sequence came in round four. Schofield stunned Guerrero with a right hand along the ropes, staying on the attack and slamming home another straight right to send Guerrero to the canvas with less than 0:30 to go in the round. Guerrero beat the count, but briefly motioned to remove his mouthpiece in a clear move to buy some time.

Schofield continued on the attack in round five, battering Guerrero (26-15-2, 16KOs) through brilliant combination punching. It was enough to convince Guerrero’s corner to not allow the fight to extend any further, allowing the bell to sound at the start of round six before alerting referee Laurence Cole that their guy was done for the night.

The official time was 0:10 of round six.

Schofield soars to 11-0 (9KOs) with the win, marking his third straight stoppage in the process.

Headlining the show, local hero and rising contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. (18-0, 18KOs) faces England’s Michael McKinson (22-0, 2KOs) in a scheduled 12-round welterweight title eliminator.
